UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN H. WILSON, OF BETHANY, MISSOURI.
HARNESS-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,124, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed February 21, 1903. $erial1l'o. 144,512. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, BENJAMIN H.WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethany, in the county of Harrison and State of Missouri; have invented a new and useful Harness-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locking-hooks, be-
' ing more particularly adapted for use in connection with harness; and it consists in the features hereinafter described and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my invention used for holding checkreins with the rein shown as locked therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showingthe device ready to receive ward movement of the device. The hook 10,
which has been described as being approximately circular, has at the rear side thereof an inlet or opening 13, the ends or points adjacent to which are beveled upon their inner sides, as shown at 13, and the said hook, as:
will be seen clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is elliptical in cross-section, the'ends or termini of said hook being rounded or inwardly beveled, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
1 1 designates a disk having a convex edge 14, fitting loosely within the hook 10, where it is secured permanently by means of a pair of thin metallicdisks or plates 15 15, which are secured on either side thereof and which terminate peripherally within the perimeter of the hook 10. The disks 15 are connected with each other and the intermediate disk 14: by means of rivets 16 or other suitable means, a plurality of which are used in order that the said plates 15 may not be displaced from the positions occupied by them relatively to the intermediate disk 14. Y
The disk 14: and. plates 15 are recessed at 17, said recess having an inner straight or flat side 18 and outwardly-curved end walls 19, which combine to form an entrance-opening to therecess 17 of considerable greater extent than the opening 15 of the circular member which constitutes the book. The movable member of the device, which comprises the disk 14 and the plates 15, may thus be turned or displaced to some extent without taking the openingof the recess 17 out of alinement with the opening 13 of the hook. Owing to this arrangement, the movable or rotary member, which is held in light frictional engagement with the hook, is not liable when idle or disengaged from the checkrein to be displaced to an extent which shall prevent the reinsertion of the checkrein Without first adjusting the rotary member to bring the recess of the latter into alinement with the hook-opening.
The operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description,
' taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. Fig. 2 illustrates the device in position for the adjustment of the checkrein, which latter is designated 0. The latter is readily placed in position, owing tethe beveled ends 18 of the hook, and it is then caused to bear against the rotary member of the device in such a manner as to reverse the position of the latter when it assumes the position illustrated in Fig. 1, where it will be seen that the checkrein is in direct engagement with the checkbook. The elliptical cross-sectional shape of the latter, as well as the curved end walls of the recess, will prevent chafing or abrasion of the checkrein, and the latter is held in position with the utmost safety until it shall be desired to release it, which maybe accomplates, which are held in position by a plurality of transverse fastening means, such as ordinary rivets, whereby the displacement of the members 14: and 15 is positively prevented. Having thus described my invention, I claim' In a harness-hook of the class described, an approximately circular hook, elliptical in cross-section and provided with ends spaced apart and beveled upon their inner sides, in combination with a disk seated in said hook and having a convex edge, thin plates adjacent to the sides of said disk and terminating peripherally within the perimeter of the hook,
and means connecting said plates with the central disk, the latter and the plates adjacent
