Description

(No- Model.)
s. F. MILLIRON, ADJUSTABLE ATTACHMENT POR'REINS.
Patented Dec. 29, 1891] WITNESSES INVENTOR:
BY 412/) Bax-AW ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
SAMUEL F. MILLIRON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
ADJUSTABLE ATTACHMENT FOR REI NS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,102, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed March 14, 1891. Serial No. 385,002. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. MILLIRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adj ustable Attachments for Reins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hand-hold for attachment to reins, and is particularly designed for use in driving trotting horses.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable hand-hold which can be readily attached on the reins at any point and clamped securely.
With this end in view the invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the application of theinvention. Fig. 2 shows the device clamped on the rein. Fig. 3 is a view from a different side with the rein shown in section; Fig. 4, a side view of the device open and detached from the rein, and Fig. 5 a top View of the same.
The device comprisesapair of oblong rounded blocks A, hinged together at one end, their adjacent or confronting sides a being fiat. The blocks A are connected by thin steel plates 17 b, secured to their inside faces a and extending the length thereof. At one end these plates form a hinge c and at the opposite end an automatic spring-catch,which comprisesa pair of shanks or necks d, projecting up from the end of one plate b, and each having an enlarged rounded head or ball f at the end. These two shanks constitute springjaws, which may be forced apart. The other plate b has at the end a single projecting shank or neck h, with a rounded head or ball 2' at the end. WVhen the blocks A are shut together, the ball 1' on the said shank h enters between the two balls f of the spring-jaws d and forces the said jaws apart until the said ball 1' has passed the balls f, when the latter spring together and confine the ball The said ballt' may be released by forcing it back from between the balls f.
The hinge c and the clasp above described are both so formed as to leave between the two blocks A a space sufficient to receive the rein at when the said blocks are closed together.
From the inside surfaces of the plates 19 b project spurs j, there being three on each plate, two at one side and one at the other, and when the blocks A are brought together the single spur of one plate comes between the pair of spurs on the other, and vice versa.
The device is used as follows: With the blocks opened apart, as shown in Fig. 4, it is applied to the rein with the said blocks on either side thereof. The blocks are then brought together upon the rein and locked together by the clasp i f. The spurs j on the plates 1) b impinge on the rein and clamp the same securely. The device will now constitute a hand-held to be used in the ordinary way.
The advantage of this device is that it is adj ustable and can be clamped at any place on the rein and will have a secure hold thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A hand-hold for reins, comprisinga pair of substantially hemispherical blocks hinged together at one side by plates secured on their adjacent faces, said plates at the opposite side to the hinge forming a spring-catch which looks automatically when the blocks are brought together, and said blocks having teeth or projections on their inner faces, substantially as described.
2. A hand-hold for reins, comprising a pair of blocks hinged together by means of plates secured on their adjacent faces and provided with projecting spurs, oneof said plates having a pair of spring-shanks with rounded heads and the other having a single shank with a similar rounded head, said shanks interlocking, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL F. MILLIRON.
