PATENT OFFICE.
BEDSTEAD-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.A 757,924, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed December 9, 1902. Serial No. 134,571. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM H. HIRsoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Fasteners, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in rail-fasteners for bedsteads,
and especially for what are known as metall lic bedsteads, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and effective fastener of this description by means of which the rails of the bedstead may be firmly secured to the posts thereof and may be detached therefrom at any time with little or no effort; and a further object of my invention is to provide for a constant drawing together of the side rail and post by any weight upon the bed and relieve the post of any tendency to be displaced from a vertical position.
Another object of my invention is to so construct the fastener that the side rails are reversible, and I also provide an adjustment whereby the bedposts may be straightened of any inaccuracy occurring in setting up the bec With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of aportion of a bedstead having my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a plan View of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an elevation of the inner face ofthe bedsteadfastener.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents one of the posts of the bedstead, which posts are provided with inwardly-extending lugs B.
C represents bifurcated hooks secured to the lugs and extending inward therefrom, and these hooks are provided with inclined slots C', extending from the top downward.
D represents the side rails of the bedstead and are formed of angle-iron and which have secured upon the outside of the same and at each end the brackets E. These brackets are so formed that a space E is left between the outer end of the brackets and the side rail D.
F is a screw-bolt which passes through the outer end of the bracket and also through the angular side rail.
Gr represents two sleeves, one confined between the head of the bolt F and the outer face of the bracket and the other confined between the inner face of the bracket and the side rail, the screw-bolt F passing through these sleeves. The outer end of the bracket E is adapted to lit between the bifurcated hooks C, the inner prong of the hook fitting within the space E. The sleeves Gr are adapted to pass within the slot C in the hooks, and as the slot C is inclined toward the bedstead-post as the side rail is pressed downward the bracket will be drawn toward the bedsteadpost. The extreme outer end of the bracket is formed polygonal, and the crotch of the bifurcated hook with which the outer end of the bracket comes in contact is also formed polygonal to correspond, so that the crotch of the hook engages the outer end of the bracket, giving the effect of a wrench embracing a nut, which will firmly hold the post in an axial position, also prevent lateral movement.
The outer end of the bracket E-is secured to the side rail, as before stated, by the screwbolt F, and the inner end of the bracket is secured to the side rail by the screw-bolt H; but this bolt passes through a slot I, formed through the side rail, said slot being formed concentric with the screw-bolt F. Thus the side rail may be swung upon the pivot F and adjusted in different positions relative to the bracket, the movement being limited by the length of the slot I. This is for the purpose of straightening the foot and head posts of the bedstead should they not be in a vertical position, and if the brackets are not secured eX- actly right upon the end rail the defect can be remedied by this adjustable feature.
The advantage of my invention 'is the simplicity of the device and the great strength of the fastener as compared to those fasteners IOO -having single hooks, and another great advantage of my construction is that by placing the end brackets upon the sides of the side rail the side rails can be turned over end for end, so that instead of the horizontal iiange of the angle-iron being on top it will, When the rail is reversed, extend inward from the vertical iange at the bottom thereof, so as to form a ledge upon which slats may lie when folding springs are used in the bed. This form of fastening will never become loose, as the inclined slots always tend to draw the bracket toward the lug, and the end of the bracket fitting into a polygonal socket will prevent any lateral movement whatsoever. v
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the rail, sleeves arranged upon the outside and inside of the outer end rof the bracket, said posts adapted to iit within the slots of the hook, a headed screw-bolt passing through the sleeves and also through the'side rail and provided with a nut upon its inner end, the outer end of the bracket formed polygonal` the crotch of the bifurcated hook also formed polygonal to correspond and adapted to be engaged by the outer end of the bracket when the parts are together, a screw-bolt passing through the inner end of the bracket and through a slot provided in the side rail, a nut threaded upon the inner end of the bolt, said slot formed concentric with the other screwbolt, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HIRAM H. HIRSCH.
