GEORGE E. AUSBURN, 0F VERA, TEXAS.
RAIL-CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. AUsBUnN, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Vera, in the county of Knox and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail clamps, and has particular reference to a device for preventing spreading of the rails.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of rail engaging lip, and means for tightening the same.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of rails showing my device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the rails, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 10 represents the rails of ordinary construction, each of which is provided with the base flange 11. Extending under each of the-rails, and supporting the base thereof is a bar 12, the inner end of which is recessed as at 13, and has in the Wall 14 a threaded aperture 15, to receive one of the threaded stems 16 of the turn buckle 17. The inner ends of the bars 12 are disposed adjacent each other at a point midway between the rails, and by means of the turn buckle, the bars 12 may be drawn together or spread apart to properly space the rails apart. On the opposite end 'of each of the bars 12 is a plate 18 secured thereto by means of a bolt 19, and provided with a lip 20 for engagement with the upper face of the base 11 of the rail. At the opposite side of the rail is arranged the base engaging clamp plate 21, having the horizontal portion 22 resting on Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 29, 1911.
Patented June 18, 1912. Serial No. 663,039.
the bar 12, and secured thereto by means of the bolt 23, a slot 24 being formed in the plate 21 so that the said plate may be moved toward or away from the base of the rail. In the portion 21 of the plate 21 is formed a threaded opening 25 in which is placed a tightening screw 26, bearing its lower pointed end 27 against the upper face of the base of the rail, the head 28 being formed so that the screws may be turned to increase the pressure against the base of the rail. When the screw is tightened the lip portion 21 will be raised slightly, which will bend the plate 21 and cause the outer lower edge to bite into the bar 12, and the upper face engage with the nut on the bolt 23. This will prevent the plate 21 becoming loose and having any tendency to slide away from the base of the rail.
What is claimed is The combination with a pair of railway rails, of a pair of bars each extending transversely under one of the rails and having their inner ends meeting at a point midway the rails, clamp plate secured to the outer end of each of the bars and engaging over the base of the rail, a second clamp-plate on each of the bars disposed on the inner side of the rail, said plate having an elongated slot, and a bolt passing through said slot and bar, a nut on the upper end of the bolt engaging the upper face of the plate, and a screw in the rail engaging portion of the plate adapted to bear against the face of the rail whereby the inner end of said plate will be caused to bite into the said bar, and said and connectedby turn buckle, a
plate to engage with the nut at the opposite side thereof.
'In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
