Description

(No Model.)
B. J. BYRNE. JOINT PASTBNER FOR RAILROAD RAILS.
No. 425,207. Patented Apr. 8, 1890.
Wilness e5.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDI/VARD J BYRNE, OF FORT BOVVIE, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
JOlNT-FASTENER FOR RAILROAD-RAILS.-
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 425,207, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed December 23, 1889- $erial No. 334,661. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BYRNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Bowie, in the county of Cochise and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joint-Fasteners for Railroad-Rails; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of my invention is to connect the meeting ends of two railroad-rails by such a fastening as will not permit them to move either in a horizontal or vertical direction.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my fastening applied to a rail-joint; Fig. 2, a plan view of the washer-plate, and Fig. 3 a similar view of the bolt. Fig. 4 is an elevation. Fig. 5 is a cross-section.
In the drawings,A A representtwo rails whose ends meet and have each a semicircular opening a at their junction.
B is the bolt, which has a head bearing on plate I) at one end, an oblong head I) at the other, and intermcdiately the neck b and barrel h The ends of the rails fit around the barrel b while the plate I) is 011 one side of the rails and the head I) on the other.
D is a metallic plate having the slot d corresponding to the head I), and also a notch cl on one edge. This plate is put over the head I), which is inclined on the under side, and over this one or more washers made of rubber or other suitable material. These washers are not, however, absolutely necessary to the working of my invention, but are preferably used to make a tighter fastening.
E is mycam-lever having a hole corresponding to that of head I), over which it is placed, and the inside cam-surfaces e e, which bear against the incline I) under the head, so as to draw all the pieces tightly together between the plate D and head I).
The cam-lever has a handle 9, which is turn ed until it stands over the notch d, when the corners d d are turned up, one on each side of the handle, to prevent it from moving in either direction.
.VVhat I desire to protect by Letters Patent is- I A rail-joint fastener consisting of the bolt having a head bearing 011 plate I), head Z), neck b and barrel b the plate D having slot d and notch d, and the cam-lever E, having an oblong hole with cam-surfaces e e, and a handle 9, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD J. BYRNE.
