FOLDING BEDS'TEAD AND CHEST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,430, dated April 19, 1904. Application filed October 22, 1903. Serial No. 178,038. (No model.)

To all whom it mayconcern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing atFort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads and Chests, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is a folding-bed, bureau, and

, mirror combined; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts; as set out in this specification and the claim hereto attached. While my bed-frame may be built with a bureau, it can as well be built with a chest.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention when the bedframe is raised. Fig. 2 is an elevation of my invention when the bed is down and the headboard raised. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the manner in which the bed-frame is hinged to the bureau and in which it, the bed-frame, is held in an upright position. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the weights attached to the head of the bed-frame and a means of holding the headboard in an upright position. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing another means of holding the headboard in an upright position.

My invention is described as follows: 1 represents the front face or bottom of the bedframe. 2 represents ornamentations on the foot thereof.

3 is a cross-rod intended for a handle, by which the bed may be raised to an upright position. It is made ornamental from aesthetic considerations, and it may also be used as a curtain-pole.

4 represents hinge-bearings, in which are hinged legs 5, in the bottom of whose feet are secured casters. The front sides of these legs are ornamented, also from aesthetic considera tions. That these feet may not obtrude or extend beyond the front face of the bed-frame, said bed-frame is provided near each edge and in its front face with a recess 7 and to prevent the legs from shutting they are each provided with a trunk-hinge 8, and that these trunk-hinges may be retreated out of the Way, so that the legs may be shut down close, said recesses 7 are each provided with an additional recess 9, into which said trunk-hinges fold when the legs are shut.

In addition to the ornamentations 2 at the head of the bed-frame there are secured to the front face thereof further ornamentations 10. Said handle or rod 3 and ornamentations may be varied to suit the taste of the builder or entirely dispensed with.

Set on the front face of the bed-frame is a mirror 11. This mirror may be of any shape or size.

12 represents a bureau in which are fitted drawers 13, provided with knobs 14. Rising from the rear part and each side of the bureau is a hinge extension 15, and secured in the center and near the top of each of said extensions is a metal sleeve-bearing 16. (See Fig. 4.) Said sleeve-bearings 16 have on their outer ends a flange 17, and passing through the rails of said bed-frame and concentric with the sleeve-bearings 16 are other sleeve-bearings 18, provided each witha flange 19, and passing through said sleeves and through said hinge extensions and said bed-rails are bolts 26, secured in place each by a nut 21 and spring-bolt 21, secured to the rear part of said bureau,its point adapted to rest against the rear edge of said bed-frame and to hold said frame in an upright position. The head cross-piece of said bedframe is provided with a longitudinal recess 22, extending the full width of the bed, and hinged in said recess'is a headboard 23. Said headboard is so hinged that it may be shut down between the side pieces of said bed-frame and is preferably so hinged when shut down that about half of its thickness will extend above the rear edges of said side rails, and to secure said headboard in a perpendicular position it is provided on its upper edge with a springb'olt 24, and in one of the said side rails and immediately on a line with the said bolt is sunk a keeper 25, provided with a flange 26. Secured longitudinally to the lower face of said cross head piece is a dovetail shaped bar 27 and fitting on said bar are a number of dovetailed weights 28. Fig. 6 shows another means of securing said headboard 23 in a perpendicular position." In this case the keeper 25 is secured in the edge of said headpiece, and the said bolt 24: is secured on the rear of one of the side rails of the bed-frame, so that its point will enter said keeper when said headboard is in a perpendicular position.

The bureau on which the bed frame is mounted is provided with casters 29.

A partition is set in the bureau about one-third from its rear side and the rear ends of the drawers 13 abut against said partition, and at a distance about one-fourth of the length of said partition is a horizontal partition 31, and fitting under said partition and in the rear part of the bureau is a drawer 32. This last-mentioned partition 31 and drawer 32 may be dispensed. with, and the bolts 21 may be set farther down through the side rails, so that the head-piece will reach nearly to the bottom of the bureau.

The purpose of providing the bed with metal hinge-bearings and metal sockets is to guard against bedbugs and other like vermin.

All the bearings, sockets, bolts, and hinges of the bed are preferably made of brass or of material nickel-plated.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A folding bed, consisting of a base 12; perforated hinge extensions 15, rising from said base, and each side thereof; sleeve-bearings 16, provided, each, with a flange 17, fitting in the perforations of said extensions; bed-frame 1, provided with perforations through its side pieces; sleeve-bearings 1 8, each having a flange 19, fitting in the perforations of said side pieces; bolts 20, passing through said sleevebearings, and thereby bringing said bed-frame between said hinge extensions; headboard 23,

hinged to the head cross-piece of said bedframe; dovetailed bar 27, secured to said head cross-piece; Weights 28, fitting on said bar; spring-bolt 21, attached to said base, its bolt end adapted to rest against the rear face of said bed frame; boltkeeper sunk in a depression in one edge of headboard 23; springbolt 24:, secured to the upper edge of one of the side pieces of the bed-frame, its point adapted to enter the bolt-keeper in the edge of said headboard; legs 6, hinged to the front face, and each edge, and near the foot of the bed-frame, and trunk-hinges 8, hinged to said feet and front face of said bed-frame, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
