Description
, gisten @anni @fitta JAMES L.v COLLINS liND IIENRYO. BURGIE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
i lietters Patent No. .7 5,735, elated Mart-11,24, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT LN sHEAvEs.
.eitjetttbult maar: tu in time sttet 'uteut aan mating met nf tia simu;
' To ALL WHOM I'i IIIAY CONCERN;
' Beit known that we, JAMES L. COLLINS and HENRY.L C. VBURGIE, of Chicago, in 'the .county of Cook, and
' State of `Illinois, have invented :anewv and useful Improvement inV-Sheeves; and Wey do hereby declareand make V known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accgm'- punying drawings, and the letters and iguresmarked thereon, which form part of this speeicatio-n.`
vOur said invention relates to an .improvedfmode of constructing the sheave, whereby a facing or lining of soft metal, o1' composition of ntietals, may be appliedin the groove aroundsaid sheave iuwhich the cord runs,
and be firmly and ei'fectnally secured therein, substantially asher'einafter'described; and said invention'eonsists in forming a rabbet in the face of the groove, or extending a'iiange in over the edge ofthe sheave, so as to form :a shoulder, within and below which 'the soft metal or composition may be moulded and secured, Aas hereinafter set'forthl v p l l To enable thosesvkilled in the art to understand how to construct and use our said invention,\vc willproeecd .to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in Whiclxv Figulel representsa side view of oui` invention.
Figure 2 'is a transverse section thereof, without the soft inetal, and
Figure isa similar View, with the`soft-metal facing applied.
ISimilar letters of vreference in the several figures denote the same parts of our invention.
A represents the s heave, which is.of lcast iron, or any other suitable material, B being the groove aroundv the same, and C is the4 lining or facing of soft met-al applied therein, for the rope or cord to run on, which has its edges fitting up under the lip or flange a upon the sheave, as clearly shown in g. 3, said angea forminga iabbet beneath, into which the soft metal fits,land is thus-held securely and'irmly in place, as desired.
The 4essentialfeature in this invention consists `in forming the rabbet or recess, vin that portion of the sheave in which tlicsoft inetalis ruvn,to t over andretain the 'soft-metal facing in place, and its form and mode of application may be varied, providinga retaining-fiange be preserved over the edge 4of the soft metal.
Having described the construction and'operntion of our invention, we will now specify what Ive claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
.We claire, in the manufacture of sheaves, the formationv of a rabbet or ilange, a, in or upon that part of the" l s lienvcin whiehrthe soft metal is applied, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.l
JAMES L. COLLINS,
HENRY C. BURGI. Witnesses LLL. Conpnn, W. E. MARINS.
