PATENT EFI-CE.
DEVICE FOR CARRYING CHILDREN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of' Letters Patent No. 755,554, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed October 24, 1902.
.To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, TIIoIvIAs OLIVER TURN- BULL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Kawhia, near Auckland, New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Carrying Children; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention has been devised for the purpose of providing means whereby young children in arms may be carried in an easy and comfortable manner to the child and at the same time reduce the labor of carrying and leave the arms and hands of the carrier free.
The device consists of a broad strap or band, adjustable in length, that is suspended across the shoulder in the same manner as a cartridgebandoleer. The free ends of the strap are each narrowed down and passed through buckles secured to the other end, so that a framework of parallel straps is obtained. From these straps is suspended a small hammock of any suitable material and in which a child may lie or sit. A restraining-strap connects the two dependent parts of the shoulder-strap a short distance above the hammock.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 is an underneath plan of the same.
a is the shoulder band or strap, which is formed in two parts and is provided with a buckle b for fastening two ends together and to allow of its length being adjusted to suit persons of different heights. The free ends of the band a are narrowed down upon different edges,so as to form narrow straps c, which are passed into and secured within buckles CZ, attached to therespectively opposite ends of the band c. The two straps @will thus lie parallel to each other and will form a frame Serial No. 128,571. (No model.)
upon which is suspended a small hammock e, composed of any suitable net-work or fancy material. In this hammock a child may be set or laid, the two straps c opening outward from each other to allow this to be done.
A strap f, adjustable in length, is secured at each end to the two dependent parts of the band (I, so as to form a restraining-strap against which the child may lean, and thus be prevented from falling off the hammock e.
The band a. may be passed over one shoulder of the wearer, so that the hammock shall lie upon the other side, or it may be passed round the neck so as to suspend the hammock in the front of the wearer, or it may be suspended in any suitable and convenient manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device for carrying children, the same consisting of a neck or shoulder band, adjustable in length, the bottom ends of which are narrowed down and secured together so as to form a frame, and a small hammock of any suitable material suspended upon such frame, as herein specified.
2. A device for carrying children, the same consisting of a neck or shoulder band, adjustable in length, the bottom ends of which are narrowed down and secured together so as to form a frame, a small hammock suspended upon such frame, and a restraining-strap the two ends of which are respectively attached to the two dependent parts of the neck or shoulder band, as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
T. OLIVER TURNBULL. Witnesses WV. A. STYJAK, E. BROOKE SMITH.
