'SUSPENDERS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,524, dated March 22, 1904. Application filed July 1l, 1903. Serial No. 165,180. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ORsBURNE Mo- OURDY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Oakdale, in the parish of Calcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Suspenders; and the primary object of the same is to provide attaching means at the terminals of the suspenders which can be secured to the waistband of trousers without the use of buttons or the necessity of buttonholes in the tabs or attaching-straps usually secured to the shoulder-straps and also to have the said tabs or securing-straps adjustable in relation to the attaching means carried thereby for shifting the same and equally distributing the wear thereover.
A further object of the invention is to provide Suspenders having shoulder-straps with tabs or securing-straps slidingly mounted in relation to connectors which are engaged by fastening-clasps of any suitable form.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of suspenders embodying the features of the invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical Section through one of the shoulderstraps and attaching-tab or securing-strap and Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of one of the attaching devices.
Similar' numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numerals l and 2 designate shoulderstraps, which may be formed of any suitable material and crossed at the back, as usual, the front extremities of the shoulder-straps having adjusting-slides 3. The double terminals of the front extremities of the straps l and 2 are engaged by suspending devicesl of usual construction, (shown in detail by Fig'. 3,) said suspending devices also serving as a connecting means for a series of terminal tabs or securing- straps 5 and 6, the tabs or straps 5 being adapted for connection to trousers and the tabs 6 intermediate thereof for engagement with adjacent underwear. The tabs or securing-straps 6 are longitudinaily adjustable through the medium of slides 7 thereon, and all the tabs, securing-straps, or ends have clasps 8 of any preferred form secured thereto. rIhe clasps 8 are carried by intermediate couplings 9, of metal, and said couplings have upper looped extremities l0, to which the tabs, securing-straps, or ends are fastened. The tabs, securing-straps, or ends are doubled and have their lower extremities assembled in relation to wear-clips 11, consisting of metal plates bent to form lower enlarged curved extremities l2 and upper converged extremities 13, having slots 14 therethrough and outwardly-flared ends l5, the two parts of each tab or securingstrap being threaded through the slots 14: and surrounding the exterior of the body of the clip, as clearly shown by Fig. 2. The upper extremities l0 of the couplings 9 directly bear on the lower looped portions of the clips, and thereby relieve the tabs or securing-straps from wear.
If at any time the tabs or securing-straps be-` come strained or slightly worn at the extremities where they engage the clips ll, they can be shifted to bring new portions into engagement with the clips and materially increase the service of said tabs or securing-straps. By having the clasps 8 in engagement with the couplings 9, which are of metal, a strong and durable structure results, and it is intended that the clips ll be applied wherever found practical.
The rear extremities of the shoulder-straps are also doubled, as indicated by the dotted lines, and threaded through clips similar to the clips ll, heretofore described, and directly engaging these rear clips are metallic couplings 16, substantially similar to the couplings 9, having clasps 17, held by their lower terminals.
From the foregoing it will be seen that strong and durable suspenders are provided by the construction and arrangement of the parts to reduce wear, especially on the tabs, securing straps or ends 5 and 6, and one of the main advantages of the present improved IOO Suspenders is that they may be attached to trousers at any point desired by the wearer without requiring the use of buttons or the formation of buttonholes in the securing straps or ends.
The form of clasp carried by the couplings is not essential and may be varied at will, and it will also be understood that changes in the proportions, dimensions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. Suspenders having doubledterminal portions, wear-clips with slots in the upper terminals thereof through which the portions of the terminals of the suspenders are passed, the said terminals of the Suspenders surrounding the exterior of the-clips, couplings directly engaging the clips, and clasps carried by the lower terminals of the couplings.
2. A pair of Suspenders, having doubled terminal portions provided with suspending devices, doubled straps held by said terminal portions, clips carried by the lower extremiin the upperterminals thereof, the straps surrounding the exterior of the clips and reversely threaded through the said slots, couplings directly engaging with parts of the clips, and clasps carried by the lower terminals of the couplings.
3. A pair of Suspenders, having doubled terminal portions provided with suspending devices, doubled straps held by said devices, clips carried by the lower extremities of the straps and constructed to form lower enlarged curved extremities from which upper converged members continue and terminate in outwardly-turned ends, the upper terminals of the clips having opposite slots therein through which the straps are reversely threaded, the straps surrounding the exterior of the clips, couplings directly engaging with `parts of the clips, and clasps carried by the couplings.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ORSBURNE MCCURDY.
