SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 583,986, dated J' une 8, 189'?.
Application filed December 28, 189B. Serial No. 617,193. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it 79mg/ concern.-
Be it known that l, ANDREW DROST, a citizen of the United States, residin g at lllarinet'te, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichy it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to suspenders; and the object in view is to provide Suspenders of such construction as to enable the wearer to stoop or assume any posture without causing `the shoulder-straps or other parts of the suspenders to bin d or hamper the wearer in such movements, the suspenders readily accommodating themselves to any movement of the body by reason of the peculiar front and back connections adjacent to the-suspender-ends.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of a pair of Suspenders constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the back connection. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the front connection. Fig. Al is a detail plan view of one vof the yokes with the rosette or ornamentation omitted. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of one of the metal fasteners by means of which the ends of the yoke are connected to the shoulder-straps or suspender-ends, as the case may be.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the shoulder-straps, which may be made of any suitable length or material and which for the purpose of carrying out the present invention are provided at their rear ends with U -shaped metal loops 2. Each of said loops is formed from a single piece of wire, the same being bent at or near its central portion to form an eye or loop proper, 3, after which the terminals of the wire are extended in opposite directions and bent around into U shape, as shown at 4, the said terminal portions conforming to the marginal edge of the shoulderstrap at its end and being secured thereto by means of a flexible binding of leather or analogous material, said binding being folded over the termina-ls of the wire and stitched or otherwise united to the shoulder-strap. Instead of forming the loop 3 integrally with the U-shaped terminal portions 4, the wire may be bent in the first instance into the U shape described and secured to the end of the shoulder-strap, after which a separately-formed link 5 may be engaged therewith, as shown.
The back connection comprises an upper and a lower yoke. The upper yoke 6 consists of a strip of metal or a piece of wire bent into segmental or substantially semicircular shape, as shown, and having its extremities recurved or coiled to form eyes 7 for engaging the loop 3 or lin ks 5 of the shoulder-straps above described. The extremities of the yoke are connected by a cross bar or strip 8, having its ends hooked through and in engagement with the eyes 7 of the yoke, thus preventing the spreading of the yoke. The space within the yoke is preferably filled by means of a rosette or any other desired ornamentation, thus giving a finished appearance to the Suspenders. V The lower yoke (indicated at l0) is similar in construction to the upper yoke and is disposed reversely thereto, the segmental portions of the yokes. being connected by a link ll, preferably in the form of a loop or flexible strap having its end portions folded around the segmental portions of the yoke, whereby said yokes may easily and freely slide through the end portions of the said link or loop in order to enable the Suspenders to accommodate themselves freely to the outline of the body and to the varying positions thereof.
The suspender-ends 12 are reinforced at their upper extremities by means of U -shaped braces or wires 13, folded around the marginal edge of the suspenderend and connected thereto by a binding 13a, alink 14 connecting said wire with one of the looped or coiled extremities of the lower yoke.
The front connection between the shoulderstraps and suspender-ends is the same as that just described in connection with the rear suspender-ends and the lower yoke of the back connection. In the front connection the segmental portion of the yoke engages with IOO a hook 15, formed from a piece of ivire, the same being folded at or near its center to constitute the hook 15 and having its terminals extended in opposite directions and then recurved and extended toward each other, so as to engage With the looped or folded end of the shoulder-strap 1. This construction permits the segmental portion of the yoke to slide Within the hook 15, or vice versa. This enables the shoulder-straps to yield laterally and slidingly and accommodate the various movements of the body.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as neiv is- 1. In Suspenders, a yoke made in substantially semieircular form and havingits curved portion slidingly engaged with one of the shoulder-straps, the siispender-ends connected to the extremities of said yoke, and a crossbar connectin g said extremities, substantially as described.
2. In Suspenders, the Combination With one of the shoulder-straps, of a metal strip or piece of Wire extending around the margin of the end of said strap, and binding material folded around said Wire and stitched or other- Wise secured to the strap, substantially as deseribed.
3. In Suspenders, the combination With a shoulder-strap, of a strip of metal bent to conform to the marginal edge of one of the ends of the strap and secured thereto by suitable binding, said strip being bent at a central point or offset from the body of the strip to form an eye, substantially'as described.
It. In siispenders, the combination With a shoulder-strap, of a strip of metal bent around and conforming to the curvature of the marginal edge of one of the ends of said strap and secured thereto by suitable binding folded over said Wire and stitched or otherwise united to the strap, and a back or front connection having a linked connection with said sti-ip, substantially as described.
5. In Suspenders, a back connection, consisting of a pair of reversely-disposed semicircular yokes, each having its ends connected by a cross-bar, the curved portions of said yokes being arranged adjacent to each other. and a link slidingly and adj ustably connecting said yokes and made in the form of a strap having` its end portions folded around the curved portions of the yoke, whereby said yokes are free to adj ust themselves relatively to each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
