To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known thatl Bnssrn STACY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Clinton, in the county of Ottawa and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved construction in suspenders and the principal object of the invention is to so construct the suspenders that they may, if desired, be worn under the shirt where they will be hidden from view and further to so construct them that they will be held against slipping from the shoulders when in place.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the suspenders that the chest encircling strap may be formed integral with the shoulder engaging strap thus permitting thesuspenders to be easily and cheaply constructed.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the suspenders that they may be adjusted to proper size and to further so construct them that when in place they will be very comfortable.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a view showing the improved suspenders in front elevation,

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the preferred manner of connecting the suspenders by the engaging loops with the buttons, and

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.

These suspenders are formed from strips or bands 10 and 11 which will be crossed at the back and secured as shown at 12 by stitches or through any other desired means thus providing upper and lower arms extending in divergent relation. The upper arms will be carried across the shoulders and then downwardly to provide depending end portions 13 which will be connected with the lower arms as shown at 14 by stitches or in any other desired manner. These de pending sections 13 have their free end portions passed through the eyes 15 of the button engaging loops 16 and are secured by the buckles 17 of a conventional construction so that proper adjustment may be made when the suspenders are in use. to provide the tab 18 and chest engaging or encircling strap 19 but it is to be understood that if desired the tab 18 may be done away with and the button 20 which is connected with the free end of this lower arm positioned at the connection of the lower arm with the depending extension 18. This chest engaging strap 19 may be loosely connected with the tab 21 which engages the button 20 and adjusted for length through the medium of the buckle 22 thereby preventing the strap 19 from being too loose or fitting too tight.

-When the suspenders are in use they will be put in place by passing the arms between upper and lower arms of the strap thus supporting the suspenders upon the shoulders with the arms extending in crossed relation across the back. The chest encircling strap 19 will then be engaged with the button 20 and adjusted through the medium of the buckle 22. After the strap 19 has once been adjusted for proper length it will simply be necessary to connect the tab 21 with the button. The strap 19 effectually prevents the shoulder engaging portions from slipping therefrom in event of violent exercise or movements of the wearer. Unless the suspenders be drawn up relatively tight they are very liable to slip from the shoulders when the wearer stoops over or bends laterally when performing certain kinds of labor. With the improved suspenders it is not necessary to draw them uncomfortably tight to prevent displacement, as above noted. If the suspenders are worn over the shirt a fragment of which is shown in Fig. 2 and designated by the numeral 23 the loops will be engaged with the buttons 24: to the trousers 25 and the buckles 17 then adjusted for proper length. W hen the suspenders are worn beneath the shirt as they would in warm weather the shirt would be drawn over the top of the trousers and. down over the button and the loop 16 would then be engaged with the button. and of course would at the same time connect the shirt with the button. Therefore the suspenders would'serve to support the trousers and further would serve to hold the shirt down. It will thus be seen that there has been provided suspenders which may be used either beneath a shirt or over the same and further that the suspenders will be very comfortable and will be prevented from slipping off of the shoulders bythe chest encircling band or strap 19.
