TO ALL WHOMiIT MAY CONGERN: v
Be it known that I, W. STOW, of P1antsville,in,the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a. new and improved Machine for Forming Beads on Sheet-Metal Gutters for Roofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is o full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enaible others skilled 4in the art to make and use the same, reference being hed to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of my invention.
Figures 2 and 3, transverse' vertical sections of the saine, taken in the line a: x, fig. 1. Figure 4, a transverse section of a gutter, drawn with a view of showing the bead formed by my invention.. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. l Sheet-metal gutters for roofs are constructed of thin metal plates, (most generally tinnedsheet iron,) bent yin semicircular shape, withfa, tubular bead formed on theouter edge, in order to stitl'en the-gutter :md keep it in proper shape.
My invention relates to a. new and improved ina-chine for forming the tubular beads on the' edges ofthe sheet-metal plates and it consists in the peculiar operation of the cam-lever, in combination with thepivoted jaws, by means of. which the jaws are closed before forming the bead.
A A represent two'standarcls or uprights, connected by n, cross-piece, B, at their-upper ends, the standards and cross-piece being all cest in one piece.v The standards are secured-by bolts to e suitable base, 0*, and the lower edge of the cross-piece B has pendent ears, let, to serve as supports or bearings for a horizontal rod, C,
Athe e'nds of which poss through the standards A A. D` D represent two jews, which extend the whole length of the machine, and are provided with pendent erms, E, onenear en'ch end, seid arms extending down nearly to the bnse,-0*. These jews ynre of curved form transversely, the lower parts, Z1, being a portion of a. hollow cylinder, of such dimensions that they moy enclose the cross-piece B of the standards A, the upper( parts, c, being a. portion of a. smaller cylinder, and above said cross-piece, as shown in igs. 1 und 3. The rod passes through the arms E of these jews, the former servingns n. fnlcrum for the latter, and between the lower parts of the Varms E ofthe two jews, a, Lcom-shaft, F, is fitted, said shaft having its bearing in the standards A A. l
This cam-shaft is provided with a lever or treedle, G. H represents springs, two or more, of spiral form, und placed between the lowerl ports, b, of the jaws. These springs pass through openings in the cross-piece B, and they have a tendency to keep the jews D D distended or forced apart.' I is a. metnl shaft or arbor, rthe diameter of which corrosponds'to the internal diameter of the bend to be bent er formed inthe sheet-metal plates. This shaft or arbor is bent at one' end, to form a. crank, J, and it has a. groove', e, made longitudinally in it, and extending its whole length. v
lhc device isised as follows: The shaft or'urbor is placed between the upper parts,rc c, to enclose the shaft or arbor. The edge of the sheet-nietal plete is then inserted in the groove of the shaftor urbor, the upper edges ,of c c not coveringit, and the shaft ler arbor is then turned one revolution, and the tubular bead thereby formed on the plate,(seeriig. 3.) The trendle or lever is thenrelensd, andthe springs .H force apart thejnw's, and the shnft or arbor, with-the edge of the plate wound upon it,lifted loutfrom between the parts c c of the jews, und the shaft or arbor then drawn out from ythe tubulonprejeotion. e v
The device, it will beseen, is extremely simple, very compact, and may be manufactured at a smell cost,
the parts being all ofczist iron, with the exception of the. shaft C and the shaft or arbor 1'., and put together without any troubler or difficulty whatever. They inner surfaces of the upper parts c c ofthe jaws are milled out, in order to render them true or smooth, Iend that is the only after-work required, with the exception of i putting the parts together.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Potent-- The combination of the ccm-lever F G with the pivoted jews D D,wh'ereby the jaws ere closed-to .form the bead, substantially es described for the purpose specified.
. 0. W. STOW.
