GEORGES. PIERCE, OF WILKESBARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 97,549, 'dated December 7 ,.1869.
IIZIWPRO'VEMIINT IN DEVICE FOR FORMING' BOIlLlIElRS.`
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all to 'whom it may come:
Bc it known that I, GEORGE S. PIERCE, ofthe borough of Wilkesbar1e,county'of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Device for Forming Boilers of any metallic substance.
The invention is an improvement in4 devices for forming boilers; and I hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and explicit description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being h'ad to ,the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
In Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, H represents a bench.
In iig. 1, A represents a square shaft, of any size, 4and shaped to form to two right angles.
m m represent mortises, in the upright part of A.
B B represent plates of segmental form, of any thickness, inserted in the mortise at the top of` shaft A, being held by a piu so as to allow them to be joined or separated on the top of the shaft A. c c represent arms, one end fastened' to the plates B B, the other end ofthe arms each having a mortise, and passing through the mortise min the shaft A.
S represents a-thumb-'screw, passing through mor- -tise 'm and arms c o, to regulate the segmental plates and fasten them.
T, a thumb-screw, to hold the plate-iron to the shaft A, and permit it to slide up and down.
D represents au ir'on follower or plate, with a cup on the' upper end, with a long mortise, and placed on the back part of shaft A, and held by the thumbscrew T. y y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The bench H represents any ordinary tool-bench.
The lower end of the right-angled shaft A, made of iron,`of any size, square, having a mortise in the top of the shaft; another about the centre of the upright part. The lower part is inserted in a hole in said bench H, far enough from the edge of the bench to let the horizontal part of the shaft A rest on the bench and have the upright part of the shaft A stand vertical ver the edge of the bench.
The plates B made of iron, of any thickness, are
then, one end of each inserted and fastened by a pin in the upper mortise m of shaft A, and fixed so as to move easily.
The arms e c are then fastened to the opposite ends of each plate, and'inserted in the mortise m of shaft A,.and used to move the plates B B, and so adjust them as to enlarge or ldiminish the circle formed by them.
The thumb-screw S is used to fasten the arms c c.
The follower D is placed 011 the `side of shaft A, and is held by the thumb-screw T, and by the m'ortise m, is permitted to' slide up or down, so as to bring the cap on the end 4of said D down on the segments B B.
To form a boiler, the'` are or, circle is formed by the adjustment of the segments B B, by the arms c c, and fastened by the thumb-screw S.
The tin or other metallic substance is then placed on the said arc, over the point where the segments 'B B join, and the follower capvD is then slid down upon it and fastened by the thumb-screw T, so as t0-hold the t-in, &c., to its place. The tiir or other metallic substance is then bent to conform to the said arc or segments B B; y
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shaftA, with its twov mortises 'nt m, segmental plates B B, with arms c c, set-screw S, follower D,
with its cap and mortise, andfastened with the thumbscrew T, arranged as described.
GEORGE S. PIERCE.
