Description

@uiten tatrs atrnt @frn ROBERT H. BIB-T, OF KOKMO, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 67,097, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN TINNERS FOLDING MACHINE.
TO ALL' WHOM I'l MAY CON CERN V Be it known that I, ROBERT H. lDIRT, of Kokomo, in the county of Howard, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pau-Folding Machines for 'l'inuers Use in the manufacture of pans from sheet metal, consisting in novel combinations and arrangements of mechanical devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of said .improved machine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section; and
Figure 3 is an end view.
'.lhe same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical part-s.
A isthe bed-piece supporting the other -parts of the mechanism. To one end of -the bed-piece is attached the standard B, having on its inner face the linclination intended to be given to the. sidesot` the pan. C is a standard of similar form, but movable, being attached to the bed-piece by a set-screw passingthrough a longitudin'al slot through the bed-piece. D is a lever hinged to the stationary'standard B, and having a longitudinal slot Vin the middle, and another one in the end. E is a stationary former attached to the lever, and having one `face inclinedat an angle corresponding to that of the stationary standard B., E2 is a similar former, the face of which corresponds to the angle of the movable standard C. This piece is attached' to the lever D by a setscrew passing through the longitudinal slot in the middle of the lever D. El is a movable piece, filling the space between the pieces E and E2, and also attached to the lever in the same manner as the latter. F is a lever, attached to the bed-piece A by a vrod passing through lugs projecting from the latter. This lever has shoulders which compress and retain in position the lever D when pressed down, the lever entering the slot in the.end of the lever D. Gis a folding door serving as a lever, hinged to lugs on the side of the bed-piece, operated by the handle K. H are spring-gauges, formed as shown in iig. 2, the curved part passing under the folding lever G, through transverse slots in the latter. These springs `are adjustably attached by set-screws passing through slots in the projection I. The object of these springs is to gauge the depth of the pan. To make either a. deep or low pan by setting the gauges.-
This pan-folder is operated as follows: The piece to form the (entire) pan being cut to the proper size, the adjustable stand C is set so as to allow the sheet or plate to lic dat upon the bed-piece; the plate or sheet is extended through on to the bed-piece, and under the lever D, until-the end of the plate or sheet touches the gauges II in the projection I. The plate is then held permanently by means of the lever D, which is held by the lever F. The folder G, lying down on a level with the bed-piece, is then raised to the position in the drawing by means ofthe handle K, enclosing one end of the plate between the lever D and the folder G, which forms the ange to one end. The other end is done the same way. The sheet, with two ends or ilanges, is put upon the bed-piece, with one side extending to the gauges H, and held there by the lever, D, (as when the end was folded,) and the standard C and former E2 so adjusted that the fold on one end of the plate will stand between the 'standard B and the former E, and the other fold will stand between the standard C and former E2, when the folder G is again .raised by the handle K- to an upright position, as in the drawing, which completes the ends and one side. The other side is done the same Way, which completes the pan, except the wire and turning ofcorners. The lever D may be used by a spring at each end, which will throw it up at each end, and may be worked by the hand or foot to an advantage.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the bed-plate and stationary standard B with the adjustable standard C and lever D, and former E and adjustable former EZ, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.- r
2. The combination of the parts A, B, C, D, E, and E2, constructed and arranged substantially as described, with the folding door or lever G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The door or -lever G in combination with the 'adjustable springs H, constructed and arranged substantially as and. for the purpose setforth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
R. H. BIRT.
