. trousers, and is more particularly in the nature of an improvement upon the novel suspenders for which I have received Letters Patent of the United States, No. 705,205, of date of July 22, 1902, in which latter case I have disclosed an arrangement which while capable of efficiently suspending the trousers will in no way interfere with the movements of the back or press upon any portion of the stomach.

In the aforesaid prior arrangement the suspenders comprise a pair of webs which pass over the shoulders and below the arms, where they are connected by rings carrying suspender-ends so disposed that they only engage with the trousers-waistband at points forward of where the hip-pockets are ordinarily located and also approximately over the points where the openings for the side pockets usually occur, the shoulder-webs being connected by a rear cross-band at such high point that while serving to relatively hold the shoulder-webs on the wearer it will in no way interfere with the free movements of the back. While such prior construction of suspenders has proved highly satisfactory, I have found" that the shoulder-webs are susceptible of considerably more range of play below the arms and greater security and comfort can be secured in' theconnected with the rest of the suspenders that they may be conveniently disconnected and connected to permit the lowering and adjusting of the trousers without necessitating the removal of the coat and vest of the wearer.

The shoulder-webs A A are made from lengths of strong webbing possessing a limited amount of elasticity. These webs are designed to pass over the shoulders and extend down at the rear to a point beneath the arms, where they are terminally provided with snaphooks B. At the front ends the webs A are provided Y with sliding buckles C, to each of which is attached one'end of a section a of said web folded upon itself, so that it engages the buckle and slips with iton the body of the websection in the common and well-known way to permit the section a to be adjusted as may be required. Each section a extends below the arm and carries at its lower end a snaphook D.

The shoulder-webs A A are connected by a rear cross-band E at the high point indicated, the webbing composing the band being preferably inelastic to serve for positively holding the webs A A on the shoulders and by the absence of yielding avoid any tendency to permit said webs to slip or accidentally work sidewise from the shoulders.

The three depending button-tabs have the buttonholes f It will be noted that the disposition and arrangement of the cord and series of button-tabs are such that the cord at both sides of the engagement with the slide f therewith presents two open loops 6 6 the loops 6' being detachably engaged by the hook D of the coacting section a, while the loop a is detachably engaged by the hook B, carried by the rear portion of the coacting web A. This engagement so positions each Suspender-end F that the button-tab f will engage a button 9 on the waistband at a point slightly in advance of where the opening of the nearest side poeketwould ordinarily occur, the inclination of the cord avoiding any objectionable pressure being exerted on the stomach. The intermediate button-tab f engages a button located on the waistband in the plane of the side seam of the trousers, thereby providing an extra strong connection at this point. The button-tab f extends at an inclination to reduce interference with the back movements and engages with a button on the waistband at a point forward of where the nearest hippocket would usually occur. By this arrangement the webs A and sections a are properly held at points below the arms and yet afforded latitude of play without uncomfortably interfering with the stomach and back movements of the wearer, said play being promoted by the capacity of the button-tabsf to slide relatively in engagement with their respective cords, thereby securing an automatic adjusting effect at such points to comfortably conform to the body movements of the wearer.

It will be obvious that besides suspending the trousers in the manner stated the straps F may be disconnected from and connected with the snap-hooks B D to )ermit the lowering and adjusting of the trousers without necessitating the removal of thewearers coat and vest.

As the snap-hooks B D are comparatively flat, their hooks proper may occupy an inside relation to avoid the catching of the outer garments thereon and without discomfort to the wearer.

The improved suspenders are highly eflicient, very simple and durable, and greatly conduce to the comfort of the wearer and are totally unaccompanied by the familiar strains which tend to burst the buttons from their fastenings.

In Fig. 2 on the cord F between the buttontabs f and f is placed a sliding clasp 11, to engage the upper edge of the waistband of the drawers of the wearer.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In suspenders, the web-sections A, each arranged to pass over the shoulder of the wearer to the front and to the back, and the end of each section terminating at a point below his arm, snap-hooks B, and I), one on each of the lower ends of said web-sections, in combination with suspender-ends, having each two button-tabs, one on each end, and an intermediate cord, an intermediate button-tab slidably engaging each of said cords and each of said cords detachably and slidably engaged, between said tabs, by the snap-hooks on the ends of said web-sections, and said cord by reason of such engagement holding said ends apart and thereby affording facility for detaching said suspender-ends from said websections, and also affording facility for the said cord to slide in said snap-hooks, and in said intermediate button-tab.
