SUSPENDERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,123, dated October 25, 1892.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMRY DAVIS, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in suspenders, and has for its object to provide the rear end of each shoulder-strap or bodystrap of suspenders with double tabs or tabs having a rolling or sliding engagement with the shoulder-straps; and, further, to provide the forward ends of the shoulder-straps with but a single tab securely attached thereto, whereby when the suspenders are Worn the rear tabs will move in unison with the body, thereby enabling the suspenders to be worn with comfort.

Another object of the invention is to connect the shoulder-straps at or near the point where they pass the shoulder-blades of the wearer, thus preventing the tendency of the suspenders to slip from the shoulders of the wearer. The attachment is so made between the shoulder or body straps that the latter extend from the connecting-strap at an obtuse angle.

It is another object of the invention to render it possible to use non-elastic webbing in the construction of shoulder-straps and still enable the suspenders to be adjusted and attached to the trousers in a manner to relieve both the suspenders and the trousers from undue strain, no matter in what manner the body of the wearer may be moved, and to con struct the suspenders in a way whereby when a person is in a sitting posture the trousers will be relieved from all tension and the suspenders will be comparatively slack upon the body.

The invention consists in the novel construction andcombination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in bot-h the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the suspenders illustrated in position upon the human form, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the suspenders removed from the form and laid fiat.

The shoulder-straps A and B are made, preferably, of a non-elastic webbing and are connected near the points where they pass over the shoulder-blades, when worn, by a crossstrip D, this strip being usually located about seven or eight inches above the rear ends of the shoulder-straps proper. The shoulderstraps are so shaped that they extend from this cross-strip both toward the front and toward the rear at more or less of an obtuse angle from the cross-strip, the ends of the opposing straps being carried in opposite directions, so that the extremities of the two straps diverge from the point atwhich they are con nected. The shoulder-straps near their forward ends are provided with take-up buckles 10 of any approved construction, and at their forward ends are also provided with single tabs 11. Each shoulder-strap at its rear end has attached thereto asocket 12, which socket may be provided with friction-rollers if in practiceit is found desirable. Through each socket a cord is loosely passed, and said cords are designated 13 and 1 1. The cords are entirely independent of each other, and each cord terminates at each of its endsin a loop or tab. The cords have free movement through the sockets 12 and are preferably made of equal length. When the suspenders are worn as shown in Fig. 1, the rear loop of the cord 14 is attached to one of the rear buttons 15 of the trousers, and the corresponding loop of the cord 13 is connected with the corresponding rear button 16 of the trousers. The forward loop of each of the cords 13 and 14 is secured to the rear button 17 of the front sets, and the tabs at the forward ends of the shoulderstraps are connected with the forward buttons of the forward sets, as is also best shown in Fig. 1. By this means it will be observed that the suspenders may be comfortably worn, no matter in what position the wearer may be placed, and no matter how violent the exercise that may be taken, as the cords 13 and 14 extend from the side to the back and the straps have a sliding or rolling action upon the cords, so that the latter will automatically accommodate themselves to any position the trousers to which the suspenders are ap-' plied, the trousers are evenly supported when the body of the wearer is in an upright position, and when the wearer is in a sittingposture the trousers are relieved from all strain,

the suspenders are comparatively loose upon the body, and therefore no upward movement is imparted to the bottom of thetrousers-leg. The location of the connecting-strip D effectually prevents the body-straps from slipping from the shoulders,

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, suspenders consisting in the two shoulderstraps united by a cross-strip at the hack, the cross-strip being located at that point where the shoulder-straps cross the wearers shoulder-blades, a single button-tab at the forward end of each shoulder-strap, a tubular loop or eye at the rear end of each strap and open from end to end with the said opening extending in the direction of the width of the shoulder-strap, and a single cord rendering freely in each tubular loop or eye and provided with button-tabs at both ends, the said two cords being disconnected one from the other, substantially as set forth.
