Be it known that 1, JOHN WILBER Bnnon'rr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Guttenberg, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to suspenders for mens trousers, and has for its principal obj eot the production of suspenders which while efficiently suspending the trousers will in no way interfere with the movements of the back or press upon any portion of the stomach.

With the above purposes in view I have devised a novel, simple, and eflicient arrangement of suspenders comprising a pair of webs which pass over the shoulders and below the arms, where they carry button-engaging straps so disposed that they only engage with the trousers-waistband at points forward of where the hip-pockets are ordinarily located and also approximately over the points where the openings for side pockets ordinarily occur, the shoulder-webs being connected by a rear cross-band at such high point that while serving torolatively hold the shoulder-webs on the wearer they will in no way interfere with the free movements of the latters back.

There are some other features and details of construction, all of which will be fully de scribed hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the general arrange ment and disposition of my improved suspenders when worn and viewed from the rear. Fig. 2 is a somewhat similar view of the suspenders, showing the same on a large scale and removed from the person of the wearer.

The shoulder-webs A A are made from lengths of strong webbing possessing a lim ited amount of elasticity. These webs are designed to pass over the shoulders and extend down at the rear to a point beneath the arm, where one end of each Web has a loop a, engaging a ring 13. Also engaging each ring B is the lower looped end 0 of a short length 0 of webbing possessing considerably more elasticity than the web A and extending upwardly beneath and to the front of that portion of the body contiguous to the shoulder, where it carries a buckle c for adjustably engaging the free end a of the web A thereat. The buckle and web connections at the points indicated admit of the convenient adjustment of the suspenders on the person of the wearer as readily as in the case of other wellknown forms of suspenders.

Depending from the rings 13 B at each side are the diverging button-engaging straps D, the members (1 d of each of which extend relatively to such distance apart that they will engage buttons 01 secured to the trouserswaistband, one being at a point forward of where the nearest hip-pocket would ordinarily be located, while the other is approximately over the point where the opening of the nearest side pocket would ordinarily occur.

The shoulder-webs A A are connected by a rear cross-band E at the high point indicated,

the webbing composing the band being preferably inelastic to serve for positively holding the webs A A on the shoulders and by the absence of yielding avoid any tendency to permit said webs to slip or accidentally work sidewise from the shoulders.

'From the foregoing description it will be easy to understand that suspenders embodying my invention will engage the waistband at such points that while the trousers will be efficiently supported all the members and parts of the suspenders will be so disposed as in no way to interfere with the movements of the back or uncomfortably press upon any portion of the stomach. As a result, the body is in no way restricted or hampered while undergoing the various bending movements and the great strain ordinarily imposed upon the suspenders and breaking or tearing off of the buttons at the rear when the body assumes a stooping posture entirely avoided.

The greater elasticity possessed by the lower forwardly extending sections 0 provides a comfortable yield at those 'points where only an uncomfortable tension might otherwise be experienced by the wearer.

By reason of the extreme simplicity of the suspenders and the freely flexible and vary ing elasticity of the webs A and 0 these latter will so conform to the body that the lower end portions will lie fiat to properly engage and comfortably hold the rings and the straps D, depending therefrom.

Obviously the improved suspenders may be modified and changed and still preserve the essential feature of my inventionthat is, the engagement of the Waistband to leave the back and stomach unhampered.

While I have referred to the suspenders as designed for use by men, it will be apparent that with lighter webbing they will be highly useful for wear by women in suspending skirts, the buttons being secured to the waistband atside points corresponding with those described with reference to trousers.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with the elastic shoulder-webs A, the elastic Web-sections G, the buckles 0, attached to said web-sections, and adjustably engaging said shoulder-webs; of the rings B, attached to the said web-sections by the loops 0, and to said shoulder-webs by the loops a, of the inelastic band E, connecting said shoulder-webs; and means for connecting the rings B, with the suspender-buttons of trousers, all substantially as shown and specified.

2. The combination with the elastic shoulder-webs A; the elastic web-sections C; the buckles 0, attached to said web-sections, and adjustably engaging the said shoulder-webs A; the rings B, attached to said web-sections by the loops 0, and to the said shoulder-webs by the loops a; of the inelastic band E, connectin g said shoulder-webs; and the buttonstraps D, formed with members d, and d, and arranged to connect said rings B, with the Suspender-buttons of trousers, all substantially as shown and specified.
