PATENT OFFICE.
CLIFFORD HOMER TORRENS, OF BANGOR, MAINE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HENRY L. MITCHELL, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
' STOVE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,028, dated March 8, 1904.
Applicationfiled May 29,1903. Serial No. 159,282. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD HOMER TOR- RENs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoves; and its object is to provide means for readily attaching and detaching the steel bands and nickel-plated ornamental parts of a stove, range, latrobe, and the like. These ornaments and bands add considerably to the price of the stove, and some purchasers do not care to pay the extra price, while others prefer to have the stove without the brightly-polished attachments. Moreover, when the stove is blacked the polished parts must be afterward cleaned up,
which adds to the labor of keeping the stove in good order.
My invention aims to overcome these difliculties by providing bands and ornaments which can be quickly attached and detached and which when taken off do not cause the stove to present an unfinished appearance, so that it can be sold without these parts, if desired, and the purchaser can subsequently add them when he pleases. Moreover, the bands and ornaments can be quickly removed when the stove is to be blacked, so that they will not become soiled. I accomplish these results by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a shelf for a stove provided with a removable rim. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar perspective view of the rim. Fig. A is a cross-section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2, on a larger scale, showing the fastening.
The stove-shelf shown is simply illustrative, as the invention is applicable to the entire stove, range, or other heater. The steel or nickel-plated rim 1 is fitted to the front and ends of the downwardly-flanged shelf 2 and is provided with space-ribs 3 to hold it in the proper position. At two or more points on the under side of the shelf are shallow bosses 4, in whose upper surfaces are shallow sockets to receive the lugs 5 on the under side of the removable rim 1. These lugs when inserted in the sockets prevent the rim from being pulled off in the plane of the shelf-that is, in a direction transverse to the sockets and the flange of the shelf. To keep it from being raised up, and thus disengaged in a direction perpendicular to said plane, I provide one or more buttons 6, pivoted on the rim, preferably on bolts 7 cast into the under side thereof and turning in a plane parallel with that of the shelf, so as to take under the lower edge of the flange 2 thereof, as clearly'shown in Fig. A.
It will be seen that when the rim is put on, with its lugs 5 hooked into the sockets audits buttons turned under the lower edge of the flange 2' of the shelf, said rim is securely held in position and cannot be disengaged from the shelf by any accidental blow; but by simply turning back the buttons the rim is free to be lifted off and set aside while the shelf is being blacked. Moreover, the shelf and its flange are finished with a smooth surface, containing merely the shallow sockets, which are not conspicuous and do not 'disfigure the stove, so
that the stove can be sold without the rim 1, and the rim can be put on at a later date, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a stove or the like having a flanged portion provided with a socket, of a removable piece having a lug entering said socket and preventing the removal of said piece in a direction transverse to said socket and flange, and a button pivoted on said piece and engaging with the edge of said flanged portion to prevent the movement of said piece in a direction perpendicular to the other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIFFORD HOMER TORRENS.
