PATENT OFFICE- GARMENT-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,448, dated March 1, 1904.
Application filed November 14, 1903. Serial No. 181,206. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, NELLIE Cnnrs'rmnn TERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garmentv Hangers; and I do declare the .following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment-hangers; and the object of the invention is to produce an article of this nature which will fold'into a small compact space, rendering the same convenient for carrying about in traveling.
More specifically the invention comprises a hanger having acentral bail-supporting member turned into a coil at its center to form an eye for engagement with a hook, while bailshaped members are hinged upon oppositelydisposed portions of loops formed at the ends of the bail-supporting member, the two bails being adapted to be fulcrumed upon said loops and to be folded back one upon the other.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings like letters i of reference indicate like parts in the views, in .which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coat-hanger, showing the same open in readiness for use. hanger folded. a
Reference now being bad to thedetails of the drawings by letter, A designates a central bail-supporting member, made, preferably, of a single piece of wire bent at its center to form a coil of eye A, and each arm of said central member is bent to form a loop B, the
Fig. 2 is a view of the portions C C of each loop being disposed in opposite directions and forming bearings for the eyes E E at the ends of the bail-shaped members E. The extreme ends of the Wire out of which said loops are formed are turned circle and forms means for holding the bail shaped members in alinement with the arms of said central bail-supporting member.
A hook K has an eye K formed at one end and adapted to engage the coil in the member A, whereby the hanger may be supported.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the weight coming on the outer ends of the bail members will cause said members to fulcrum upon the curved marginal edges of said loops, and if the weight is sufiicient said hanger will spring somewhat and serve to hold a garment in natural shape.
lrVhen it is desired to fold the hanger, one bail is turned back against the inner marginal straight portions of the loop by the opposite end of the middle memberand the second loop is folded over, as in the manner disclosed in the drawings, thus making the device of such shape as may be easily carried in the pocket or placed in a traveling-bag, also being adapted for convenience in transmission through the mail.
While I have shown a particular construction of garment-hanger embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations, if desired, in the detailed construction of the same without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding garment-hanger comprising a bail-supporting member-made of a single piece of wire and bent at its center to form an eye,
vloops at the ends of said member, and bails hinged upon said loops adapted to fold back, one upon the other, as set forth.
2. A garment-supporter comprising a central bail-supporting member, made of a single piece of, wire bent at: the center to form an eye, each arm of said member bent to form a loop in the plane at right angles to said central eye, two bails provided with eyes at their ends and mounted upon said loops and designed to rest upon the outer curved marginal IO its ends and pivotally mounted upon said straight portions of the loops, and supported in alinement with each other by the curved portions of said loops, and a hook engaging said eye, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my I5 signature in presence of two witnesses.
