DETACHABLE HANDLE FOR UMBRELLAS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,046, dated January 19, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD PHILIBERT BEVILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Detachable Handle for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to detachable handles for umbrellas, and has for its object to provide a handle for an umbrella which may be readily attached to the rod and readily detached therefrom when it is desired to do so.-

A further object of the invention is to provide such a form of connection between the handle and the umbrella-rod that when the handle is attached to the rod all relative motion of the rod and handle is absolutely prevented and the handle so secured to the rod that breakage of the handle at the point of attachment to the rod is prevented.

With the objects above stated and others in view, which will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout, and of which the novel features are pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an umbrella with my detachable handle attached thereto. longitudinal section through the upper end of the umbrella rod and handle, the parts being shown on larger scale than in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates an umbrella-rod having the upper end thereof suitably formed to present a lockingface, the preferred form being that shown in which the locking-face is an inclined surface 2, disposed at an oblique angle to the axis of the rod and having a shoulder 3 at the lower endthereof.

The handle of the umbrella (designated 4:) is provided at the lower end with a socket 5, adapted to cooperate with the end of the umbrella-rod to form a rigid connection therewith. The socket 5 is preferably formed by Fig. 2 is a'view in.

In orderto holdthe handle and rod in proper association when the end of the rod is inserted into the socket 5 in the lower end of the handle, I provide a sleeve 10, having internal threads 11, which is rotatably mounted on the rod 1 near the upper end thereof, as shown. At the lower end of the sleeve 10 is formed an inwardly-disposed flange 12, having a central openinglarge enough to permit the passage of the lower end of a collar 13, which is rigidly mounted upon the rod at a suitable point and which has at the upper portion thereof an outwardly-disposed flange 14, with which the inwardly-disposed flange 12 of the sleeve 10 is adapted to contact to limit the upward movement of said sleeve.

The mode of assembling the handle and rod as above described will be apparent from the drawings. 1 is fitted into the socket 5 in the lower end of the handle, and the sleeve 10 is then rotated, causing the threads 11 on the inner surface thereof to engage with the threads 9 on the reduced portionof the handle 4:. When the flange 12 at thelower end of the sleeve 10 comes into contact with the flange 14 on the collar 13, the handle will be drawn down upon the end of the rod, causing the inclined locking-faces on the end of the rod and in the socket 5 to jam hard against each other and The tapered upper end of the rod form a practically rigid connection between 1 the handle and the rod.

the steps of the operation described in the preceding paragraph are reversed. The sleeve 10 is unscrewed from the threads provided on the handle, and the handlemay then be readily detached by merely lifting it upward.

It will be observed that the number of parts necessary to effect the union between the handle and the umbrella-rod as above described is small and that none of said parts are of such structure that they are liable to injury in ordinary use. It will also be noted that the construction is one by means of which perfect rigidity of connection between the handle and the rod is secured and that the device is one permitting the handle to be attached to or detached from an umbrella-rod with the utmost despatch. It will also be observed that as the sleeve 10 encircles the lower portion of the handle for an appreciable distance and lies in close contact therewith the tendency of the umbrella-handle to split when much force is applied thereto is practically overcome.

While I have shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the preceding paragraphs the preferred form of embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that various changes may be made in the form, proportions, and exact manner of assemblage of the elements thereof, and I wish it to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the elements shown and described as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and lie within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The combination in an umbrella of a handle having a cylindrical bore forming a socket, a plug having a beveled lower end secured in the upper portion of said socket, a rod having a beveled upper end adapted to contact with the bevel of the plug in the socket of the handle, a sleeve loosely mounted on said rod and having at its lower end an inwardly-disposed flange, a collar rigidly fastened on said rod and adapted for engagement with the flange on said sleeve, and means for securing said sleeve to said. handle.
