THOMAS A. TRACY, 0F RAYMOND, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED WHIP AND CANE.
Application filed November 22, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS A. TRACY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raymond, in the county of Lancaster, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Whips and Canes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in combined whips and canes, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character which can be either used as a whip or walking cane.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with novel means for holding the whip in its position for use or in its inoperative position, and at which time the device serves as a cane.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with the whip in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section showing the whip in its inoperative position. i
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the connector.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the stock, which is formed from suitable light metal, and has one end provided with internal threads 2 which are adapted to engage the threads 3 formed exteriorly of the connector 4. The connector 4: is formed from tubular metal and is provided at one end with a tapered extension 5 which is adapted to be inserted in the end of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 62,793.
whip 6, and is held therein by a rivet 7 which is engaged in the perforation 8 formed in said extension.
The connector 4 is further provided with longitudinal grooves 9 which are diametrically disposed and are slidably engaged by the pins 10 carried by the collar 11 which encircles the connector 4, said collar serving as a means for conveniently rotating the connector to either hold the whip in its operative or inoperative position. It will be noted that during the rotation of the collar 11 that the same rests upon the adjacent end of the stock 1, and when rotated in one direction the connector 4 will be fed outwardly, and when rotated in the reverse direction the connector will be fed inwardly and at which time the pins 10 will slide in the groove 9.
It will be of course understood that when the whip is engaged in the stock 1 that the connector will close the adjacent end of the stock so as to prevent entrance of foreign matter.
What I claim is In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow stock, of a connector having grooves formed longitudinally thereof, a collar engaged around the connector and having pins carried thereby for engaging said grooves, and means carried by one end of the connector for attaching a whip thereto, said connector and stock being adapted for threaded engagement, whereby when said collar is rotated the connector can be engaged with or disengaged from the stock, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS A. TRACY.
Witnesses:
