Application filed March 1, 1918. Serial No. 219,881.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, SWAN HILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'inven.- tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to tools, of the awl or ice-pick type, and the primary object of i the invention is to provide a tool of this bore in which is slidably seated a bit or pin` nature which is constructed so that the pin or pointed bit of the same may be clamped or telescoped withinthe handle of the same'.
More specifcally,the object of this invention is to provide a tool as specified which includes a handle provided with a hollow carrying socket member which is slidably moved by a thumb plate for shifting a ball bearing into a position for locking the pin or bit in a projected position or to4 permit the same to be telescoped witliin'the handle.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed. h
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:

Referring morev particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the handle of the toolas an entirety which is constructed of a gr1p ping section 2 to which is removably at tached a metal shell 3 which also forms a portion of the handle 1. The metal shell 3 is screw threadedly connected to the portion 2 as clearly shown at t in Fig. 2 of the drawings and it is provided with a bore .5 which is reduced as shown at 6, and terminates outwardly through the outer rounded end 7 of the shell 3 in a relatively small opening S. which is of practically the same diameter as the bit or pin 9 of the tool which has its outer end sharpened as shown at 10. The bit or pin 9 of the tool extends slidably through a slidable socket member 11 which is slidably mountedjin the shell 3 and has an annular fiange 12 formed thereon which engages the inner surface of the` shell 3 and acts as a guide for the socket member p11 as well as providing means to which a pin 14 1s connected. Thelpin la vprojects outwardly through an elongated slot 15 formed in thel shell and it has a thumb plate 16 yattached to its outer end which is positioned exteriorly of the shell 3. A collar 17 is screw tlireadedl-y mountedl in the shell 8 near the end of the bore 5 which is reduced and this collar has its outwardly extending end beveled inwardly as clearly shown at 18 so as to provide a shoulder against which a ball bearing 19 is clamped for locking the pin or bit 9 in an extended or projected position. The socket member 11 is provided with a recess 20 which eX- tends inwardly from the outer surface thereof which receives the bearing ball 19.
When it is desired to telescope the bit or pin 9 within thev longitudinally extending bore 21 which is formed in the handle 1, both in the socket member 11 and in the grip portion 2, the tool is moved into a vertical position so that the pin or bit 9 will extend upwardly and the thumb plate 16 is forced upwardly-which will move the ball 19 outwardly out of engagement with the inclined j l shoulder or end of the collar 17 allowing the ball to move outwardly within the recess or 'bore 5 ofl the metal casing 3 and out of the angular recess 22 formed in the pin or bit 9,
which will release the locking connection between the pin 9 and the socket member 11 permitting the pin to fall by its own weight within the bore 21. A spring'23 is coiled about the socket member 11 and one end of v the spring engages the collar 17 while the other end is connected tothe annular flange A12 formed upon the socket member 11 as is carrying the tool about in his pocket. When it is desired to project the bit or pin 9, the tool is moved into a. vertical position so that the point of the pin will extend downwardly and the thumb plate 16 is again moved downwardly or outwardly toward the ends 7 of the casing 3, which again moves the ball 19 outwardly so as to allow the pin 9 to fall by its own weight downwardly until the head 25which is formed upon the inner end of thepin engages the shoulder at the outer terminal of the bore 21 which will arrest the movement of the bit independently of the handle structure 1 and then when pressure is relieved from the thumb plate 16 the spring 93 will return the socket member to its normal position, allowing the ball 19 to fall into the annular recess 22 and lock the pin or bit in an extended position.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A tool of the character' set forth comprising a handle having a longitudinally eX- tending bore, a sleeve secured to the forward end of the handle, a chuck mounted in the sleeve for movement toward and away from said end of the handle and provided with a bore alining with the bore of the handle, a bit slidably mounted in the chuck to permit it to be positioned in the handle or projected beyond the forward end thereof, means operend of the handle, a chuck mounted in they sleeve for movement toward and away from said end of the handle and provided with a bore alining with the bore of the handle the bore of the chuck having its rearward portion enlarged to provide a shoulder, a headed bit slidably mounted in the chuck to permit it to be positioned within the handle or pro jected beyond said end of the handle ywith its head in engagement with said shoulder, means operable by the movement of the chuck in the direction of the handle to lock said bit in its projected position against rearward movement with relation to the handle and to lock said chuck against movement in the same direction, a spring urging the chuck in said direction, and a thumb piece connected to said chuck.
