Description

NITRD STATES AARON KERRY, OF MARYSVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TIVO-THIRDS TO MYRON MILLS AND A. S. KERRY, OF SAME PLACE.
BRACE AND DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,512, dated January 31, 1899.
Application led March I 6 1 8 9 8.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON KERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces and Drills, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of my invention to obtain a brace adapted for use with the ordinary wood-bits or for drilling metal; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is aside elevation of my improved brace. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the lower portion of said brace and drill-chuck.
A is the stock, which may be of ordinary construction, except as hereinafter specified, being provided with the swivel-head d and handle Z9.
B is the drill chuck or clamp, which also may be of any suitable construction. On the shank between the stock and chuck is swiveled a collar C, having arms or hooks c, with which a chain D is adapted to be engaged, said chain being connected with the work to be drilled. Between the swiveled head and the chuck the shank is provided with an extensible or feed section, which is preferably constructed as follows: The upper section of the shank E is hollow, having a square or polygonal aperture CZ, with which the lower section F of the shank is adapted to slidingly engage. This lower section is secured to the drill-chuck B preferably by a screw-thread engagement. The upper section E has formed thereon the collare below the swiveled collar C, and below this collar it is exteriorly screwthreaded and adapted to engage with interior screwthreads formed in a sleeve G. The lower end of this sleeve is swiveled to the shank F and chuck B by the collar f, formed on said shank above the internal apertured iiange g of the sleeve.
The sleeve Gis provided with serrations or lugs h to form a convenient handheld, and also preferably with the aperture t, in which a 5o wrench or tightening-tool may be inserted.
The brace being thus constructed, when it is to be used for drilling metal the swiveled collar O may be secured by means of the chain D to the work, and the drill may then be fed down by turning the sleeve G. For boring wood the chains may be detached and the brace used in the usual manner.
What I claim as my invention isl. In a bit and drill brace, the combination 6o with a stock and chuck, of a shank comprising a section secured to thestock, and a section secured to the chuck and longitudinally movable relative to the other section, a collar swiveled to the stock-section, means for securing said collar to the work, and a feeding device swiveled to one shank-section and screw-threaded to the other shank-section.
2. In a bit and drill brace, the combination with the stock and chuck of an extensible 7o shank connecting said stock and chuck comprising the upper and lower telescopic sections, a collar swiveled upon said upper section adapted to have a securing-chain attached thereto and a feed-sleeve for extending said telescopic sections having a screw-thread engagement with one section and swiveled to the other section.
3. In a bit and drill brace, the combination with the stock and chuck of a connecting- 8o shank therefor comprising an upper hollow section having a polygonal aperture and an exteriorly-screw-threaded portion, a lower section telescoping in said upper section, an interiorly-screw-threaded sleeve swiveled to said lower portion of the shank and engaging with the threaded portion of said upper section, and a collar swiveled upon said upper section for the purpose described.
4. In abit and drill brace the combination 9o with the stock and chuck of a connectingshank therefor, comprising the upper hollow section E exteriorly screw-threaded and having the collar @above the threaded portion, a polygonal lower portion telescopically engagl ing said upper section, secured to said chuck :md having the eoilarj", the sleeve G interiorly threaded to engage with the threaded upper portion of the section E and having the apertured internal flange at its lower end swiveled in the lower section F below the collar f, and the collar C swiveled on the section E above Jhe collar e for Jhe purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
AARON KERRY.
