E. FELIX.
EXTENSIBLE TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED same. 1921.

E aim {n e 1214- w m D 'J y a/ 0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN FELIX, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSIBLE TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr 11, 1922- Application filed September 3, 1921. Serial No..498,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enwm FELIX, a
citizen of the United States, residing at' .Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Extensible Tool,
wrenches, or other rotatable tools, when itv is desired to use them for doing their work in places where they can not be used on account of the almost inaccessible position.
of the parts to be engaged by the wrenches and the like; which shall be extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, efiicient in operation, with its parts so made, arranged and'co-operating. with one another, that'the device can be readily attached to a tap or socket wrench or other desirable tool, and its parts quickly and easily extended to a suitable length and then securely locked in their adjusted position.
Other objects and'advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the following description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing, which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention-- I Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of V a tool embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached perspective view of a key used in connection with the members of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawing, the reference numeral 5 designates the body of the tool which may be made of any suitable size, form and material, but preferably cylindrical in shape and of metal. One end of the body 5 is provided with a screw-threaded reduced por-- tion 6 for insertion into a suitable socket of a wrench or its handle, and near the reduced screw-threaded portion, said end of the body is provided with a cross-sectionally angular portion 7 bv means of which a wrench or clamping device maybe applied for turning the body and. the wrench or tool after the latter has .been secured to or mounted on the part 6 of the body. The opposite end of the body 5 is provided with external screw-threads 8 to engage internal screw-threads on a sleeve 9, which is rotatably mounted on the body 5 Thatend of the'body 5 carrying the screw-threads 8 is provided within. its bore or cavity with a longitudinally extended and inwardly iiiclined key-Way 10 for the reception of a locking key 11-which may be made of any suitable size and form, yet by preference of about the shape shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The outer end of the sleeve has an inwardly extended annular flange 12 to engage a transversely disposed groove 13 with which the key 11 is provided on its outer surface near its outer end. This key has its outer surface beveled or inwardly inclined to correspond with the inclination of the key seat 10 and has its opposite or inner surface flat to rest on a flat portion 14 with which the extensible rod 15 is provided from its inner end to a point near its outer end. The outer end of the slidable.
rod 15 is bypreference provided with a cross-sectionally-angular portion-16 to engage a wrench orother device-for turning the tool after the parts thereof have been adjusted and locked in their adjusted positions.
From the foregoing, and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that by my improvements I have provided an extensible device of the character described, which can be manufactured and placed on the market at a much less cost than any device for a similar purpose that I. am aware of, without in any way diminishing its efiiciency, durability or strength.
The operation of the device is simple and as follows A tap or socket wrench or other suitable tool to be turned, may be mounted on the reduced portion 6 of the body of the tool, when by screwing the sleeve 9 outwardly on said body, the key 11 will be retracted from its seat by reason of the action of the screwthreads of the sleeve with those on the outer end of the body of the device. As soon as the key has is manifest t t the rod 15 can be moved longitudinally with respect to the body so as to lengthenor shorten the tool.
When the parts have been adjusted to the desired position, the sleeve 9 can be turned in the proper direction to cause the key 11'- to advance in the key seat 10 until it reaches? its inward limit, when it is obvious that the extensible rod 15 will be locked in position against rotary movement as well as longitudinal movement.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-* 1. An extensible tool comprising a tubular body having at one of itsendsexternal screw-threads and at its other end means to engage'a wrench or other device to be operated by the tool, a sleeve rotatably mounted onthe body in screw-thread engagement therewith and having at its outer end an inwardly extended annular flange,
a rod slidably mounted in the body, and a key interposed between the said rod and the inner wall of the body for slidable movesleeve.
j 2. An extensible tool comprising a tubular 'body having at one of its ends external "screw-threads and internally thereof an in- Wardly inclined key seat, said body having at its other end means to engage a wrench or other device to be operated by the tool, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the body in screw-threaded engagement therewith and having at its outer end an inwardly extended annular flange, a rod mounted in the body for lon itudinal movement and having a portion 0 its surface flattened, and an inwardly tapered key interposed between said flattened portion of the rod and the inner wall of the body for slidable movement with respect to said parts, said key having at its outer end a transversely disposed groove engaging said flange on the sleeve.
