To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs DRUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of the same is to provide a device of this class having a plurality of nut sockets or nut engaging openings of various sizes and contours as well as gripping jaws for engaging a pipe or nutvassociated with an extensible stock whereby the wrench structure as a whole may be lengthened or shortened to adapt it for.en gageme'nt'with nuts or other devices in-various positions that cannot be readily 'reached from the exterior of the mechanism or apparatus with which they may be used by means of an ordinary wrench, the one portion of the stock being in the form of a stem telescopically fitted in a tubular mem-` ber of the stock, and under certain conditions the stem has a locking association withl the tubular member to prevent rotation of the stem.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.`

The numeral 5 designates a tubular stock having one extremity for a considerable por tion. of its length formed with exterior screw-threads 6 and the terminal of thesame extremity slotted, as yat'7, to receive `a pair of jaws whose jaw members 8 'have their inner ends lapped and engaged by a pivot pin 9, a V-shaped spring4 l0 being interposed between the jaws and engaging the pivot pin to normally distend the jaws when the latter are free tomove outwardly; 4Each of the jaws 8 has va shankll with an outer conve'x surface 12 regularly continuing to the Specification of Letters Patent.

rear terminal of the shank and the inner sides of the Shanks as at 13, are practically longitudinally straight and therewith the legs 14 of the spring 10 have lose engagement. The inner opposing faces of the jaws are toothed, as at 15, to provide for a gripping action of the jaws relatively to a pipe or other device with which they may be engaged, and the inner opposing sides of the jaws are longitudinally grooved, as at 15, to receive the legs 14 of the spring and thereby permit the jaws to be tightly closed,
' and the spring legs are also protected by this grooved construction and prevented from being crushed or injured by the devices I gripped by the jaws. The screw-threads 6 are provided for the adjustment of a clamping sleeve 16 mounted on the tubular stock 5 and correspondingly interiorlyl screwthreaded, as at 17. `The sleeve is tubular and the inner surface of the front extremity thereof is beveled, as at 18, and the front end edge is rounded, as at 19, so that the front end of the sleeve will easily ride over or engage the convex surfaces 12 of the shanks 11 of the jaws. The front end of the sleeve 16 is also formed with a plurality of slotsr19a of such width as to permit the shanks of the jaws to move outwardly inv the slots, the screw-threaded ortions of the front extremity of the stoc 5 projecting over the opposite sides of the jaws at points in diametrical relation to the slot 7 in the said front extremity of the stock for receiving the jaw shanks. Between the slots 19*L the front end of the sleeve 16 is provided with bearing surfaces 19h, which, when in engagement with the edges 12 of the Shanks` 11, hold the jaws 8 against movement in accordance with the adjustment of the sleeve. It will be seen that by rotating the sleeve 16 the slots 19a may be readily brought into registration with the yShanks 11 of the j aws 8 to permit the said jaws to freely and automatically open through the action of the legs 14 of the spring 10, and then the jaws gagement thereby with square, hexagonal or other nuts. Byjproviding the sleeve 16 With the nut sockets 20 the use and application of the improved wrench are increased, or the Wrench is given a greater scope as to its service in adapting the same for nuts of varying sizes and shapes. `Extending transversely across theivinterior of the stock 5 adjacent to the jaws 8 is a locking pin 21, and on the opposite end of the said stock a cap 22 is fitted and held by cooperating screwthreads formed in the two parts. The cap 22 has a central opening 22 surrounded by an annular flange Q. and between the said flange and the adjacent end of the stock 5 a soft packing of oiled leather or other analogous material is interposedy and slightly projects inwardly beyond the wall of the bore of the stock 5 or has an opening 25 therein of less diameter than the said stock bore, and likewise the opening in the cap is smaller in diameter than the stock bore, and by means of the annular iiange the packing Qd is positively held in place.
Within the stock 5 a stem Q6 is telescopi` cally mounted and may be tubular, as shown by Fig. 2, or solid as shown by Fig. 3; and on the rear end of the said stem a head :2T is secured and is formed from tubular material or is a cylinder which is intersected at its side portion by the said stem 26. The head 27 has nut sockets 28 and 29 of different forms and dimensions in the opposite endsv` and at diametrically opposite points in the side are other sockets 30 and 3l. which as shown are of square form or adapted for square nuts of different dimensions, the wall of the cylinder or head Q7 being filed or cut-away, as at 32, to provide tiat hearing surfaces for a square nut and the remaining end walls' by reason of the convexity of the cylindrical head` serve as bearing means against opposite sides of the nut. In the head 27. at a point diametrically opposite the attachment of the rear end of the. stem 2G to the head, a nut socket Bil .is formed `which is shown as hexagonal in contour, but may be of any shape or dimensions. The head 27 is enlarged, at 35, and formed with a screw-threaded bore 36 to receive the rear screw-threaded extremity 37 of the stem 2G; and as an additional securing precaution a set-screw 3S is inserted through a portion of the enlargement 35 and caused to impinge against the screw-tl'ireaded extremity 37 of the stem 26 to reliably fasten the head 27 .to the stem, The stem 2G is telescopically disposed in the stock 5 and has frictional engagement with the packing 24 to prevent the stem from having loose movement within the stock when the stock and stem arc adjusted to extend the complete de.- vice when it is desired to reach ini 'ardly into machinery or part-of a vehicle or other apparatus to engage ay nut for application or removal thereof, or for any other purpose that may be' found necessary Where the Wrench as a Whole may be practically operated. The end of the stem 26 opposite that carrying the head 27 is formed With a cross or diametrical slot 39 to engage the pin 21 and thereby prevent the said stem from rotating Within the stock during operations requiring a rotation of the completewrench,
as for instance when engaging the socket 84 in the head 27 with a nut or causing the jaws 8 to coperate with a part that may be re quired to be tightened or loosened, and under such conditions it will be understood that the stem 26 Will be fully inserted within the stock 5. The tubular stock 5 is formed with a longitudinal groove 5 on the inner side thereof to receive the projecting end of a pin 26 secured in the stem 26 adjacent tothe slot 39. The object of this groove 5n and projecting pin 26 is to hold the stem 26 against rotation in the stock 5 when said stem is projected outwardly to lengthen the device as may be desired. The pin Q6 and groove 5 operate mainly rwhen the stem 2G is disengaged from the pin Q1, but when said stem engages the pin 'll the groove 5 and pin 26 conjointly act-to hold the stem against rotation and resist breakage of the pins when heavy stress isimposed on the stem in releasing tight nuts or in applying nuts of various forms. The wrench may be used with sidewise action in engaging either of the sockets 28, 29. 30 or 3l of the head 2T with a nut or either of the sockets 2O of the sleeve 1G, and the jaws 8v may also be used when the stem is extended or pushed into the stock 5 with equal etliciency.
From the foregoing the operation ofthe improved wrench will be readily understood and in addition to the head serving as a nut socket means it will also be convenient as a gripping device for operating thev nut and pipe engaging features at the opposite extremity of the wrench, especially when/.the slot 32) of the stem is in engagement with the pin 21. the head 27 is used'or applied to a nut the opposite extremity of the Wrench will be gripped, the hands of the operator being preferably applied to the sleeve 1Ga but the When any one of the sockets inexterior portions or edges of the jaws 8 and I cap being cross-pin to prevent rotation of the stem when'the latter is projected to its predetermined maximum extent within the stock, the exterior end of the stem having a cylindrical head fixed therein.
A wrench of theclass specified coinprising a tubular stock with nut engaging means at one end and a cap on the opposite end having an annular end fiange around an opening therethrough of less dimensions than the bore of the stock, the fiange of the disposed a distance in i'ear of the adjacent end of the stock, an annular packing held between the annular flange of the cap and the end of the stock and projecting into the stock, and a stein extensibly mounted in the stock and movable through the said cap and packing and having a head on its end exterior of the stock, the packing frictionally engaging the stem and obviating loose movement of the latter in the stock.
3. A wrench of the class specified comprising a tubular stock with movable nut engaging means' and an interiorly located cross-pin at one end and friction means at the opposite end, and a stein extensibly mounted .in the stock and having engagement with said friction means and also provided with a slot at its end within the stock ifo engage the'said cross-pin to prevent rotating movement in the stock of the stem when the latter is fully projected within the stock, the friction means obviating too loose movement of the stein relatively to the stock when'the stem is extended outwardly from the stock and the slot in the stem disengages the pin in the stock, stem exterior of the stock with a head.
4. A wrench of the class specified comprising a stock"with an exteriorly screwthi'eaded slotted extremity, a pair of gripping jaws mounted in said slotted extremity and having shanks with outerregular conbeing provided the end of the vex edges, a spring having legs engaging Lne inner edges of the said jaw7 Shanks, and a sleeve of elongated form adjustably mounted on the said screw-threaded extremity of the stock and having slots in the front end thereof to permit the jaws to move outwardly, the intermediate portion of the sleeve being thickened.
A wrench of the class specified com'- prising a tubular stock having an inner groove and also provided 'with movi ble nut engaging meansl and an interiorly located cross-pin, and a stem telescopically fitted in and extensible in relation to said stock and having its end within the stock formed witl a cross-slot to engage the said cross-'pin and also provided with a pin having a projecting end to engage the groove in the stock, the exterior end of the stein having a cylindrical head fixed thereon.
A wrench of the class specified comprising a tubular stock with movable jaws at one end having grooves extending longitiidinally of the inner opposing faces, thereof, a spring engaging the jaws and having legs movably fitting in the said grooves, a
interiorly of the stock adjacent to the jaws, the stock also provided with a longitudinal groove on the inner side thereof and a stem telescopically fitted in and extensible with relation to said stock and having its end within the stock formed with a cross-slot to engage the said cross-pin and also provided with a projecting pin to engage the groove of the stock toprevent rotation of the stem in the stock, the exterior end of the stein having a head fixed thereon.
