Description

M. M PHILLIPS.
NUT LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 20. m5.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
MAURICE M. PHILLIPS, OF UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1915. Serial No. 9,625.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAURICE M. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cerl tain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an eflicient and inexpensive nut lock including essentially a locking bar adapted to be engaged within registering grooves or recesses formed in the bolt and nut to lock these parts against relative rotation, and means for detachably connecting the locking bar with the nut.
Another object is to provide a nut lock including a locking bar and a cap detachably secured to the nut and constituting a holder for the locking bar for holding the latter in locked position.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of the improved nut lock. Fig. 2 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the cap in section. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the nut removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a bolt of the usual or any preferred construction having a head 6 at one end and external screwthreads at the opposite end, the screwthreaded end being formed with an inwardly directed and longitudinally elongated groove or recess 7 adapted to receive the locking pin, to be hereinafter described. A nut 8 is fitted upon the screwthreaded end of the bolt 5 and is formed with a plurality of radial grooves or recesses 9 adapted to be moved into alinement with the diametrical groove 7 in the threaded end of the bolt 5.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the A hollow preferably formed of sheet metal, and shaped conformably with the nut 8 is removably engaged over the outer end of the latter and is formed with a circular opening 11 in its end wall of slightly greater diameter than the screwthreaded end of the bolt 5 to receive the latter. Two of the diametrically opposed sides of the cap or holder 10 are formed with inwardly directed tongues 12 adapted to spring into grooves or notches 13 formed in the several side faces of the nut 8 ad acent the inner end of the latter so as to secure the cap or holder in adjusted position.
A locking bar 14 is secured diametrically within the holder or cap 10 adjacent the outer end of the latter and is adapted to engage within the alined grooves or recesses 7 and 9 in the bolt 5 and nut 8, respectively, so as to reliably lock said nut and bolt against relative rotation.
The groove or recess 7 in the bolt 5 is preferably of considerably greater depth than the grooves 9 in the nut 8 so as to afford a wide range of adjustment of the nut upon the bolt, and the spring tongues 12 are of sufiicient length to engage within the notches 13 to reliably secure the holder or cap 10 and the locking bar 14 in adjusted position.
What I claim is:
A nut lock including a bolt having a longitudinal groove in its threaded end, a nut fitted on said bolt, a hollow cap or holder shaped conformably with and inclosing the outer portion of said nut and having an aperture rotatably receiving said bolt, said nut having a plurality of notches in its side faces, a pair of diametrically opposed spring tongues carried by the inner edges of the sides of said cap or holder removably engaged in said notches for securing said holder to said nut, and a locking bar secured in the outer end of said cap or holder engazed within said groove to lock said nut and bolt against relative rotation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
