PATENT OFFCE.
JOHN H. WAITE, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
CUPBOARD EXTENSION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,446, dated December 29, 1903.
Application filed August 21, 1903. Serial No. 170,300. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, JOHN H. WAITE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cupboard Extensions; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object sought in my invention is to provide a combination extension-cupboard provided with a plurality of leaves that may be folded backward in the space between the shelves part of the cupboard and at the top of the sides, between which the movable part of the cupboard is inclosed when it'is not rolled out to support the front end of the eX- tension.
In t-he drawings, Figurel is a side view of the cupboard with the extension-leaves folded backward in the space between the upper shelves section and the lower movable section of the cupboard. Fig. 2 is also a side view of the device, but showing the movable part rolled from beneath the shelves of the cupboard, the two hinged extension-leaves being folded down, forming a part of the extension. Fig. 3 is a front View of the cupboard, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the cupboard with the hinged leaves folded down and a slideleaf on the top of the movable part shoved forward of said part the width of a leaf.
Similar letters refer to similar parts thro ughout the several views.
A is the back of the cupboard.
B is the upper shelves part of the cupboard, the shelves being indicated by dotted lines therein.
C C are the lower side pieces of the cupboard. The space between said sides C O is open at the top, front, and bottom, the sides forming a receptacle between which the rear half of movable part D, which is provided with suitable guides, may be inclosed, as shown in Figs. l and 3. E is a leaf supported l by said movable part D and which is adapted to be shoved back and forth thereon. D is the solid smooth top of said movable part, which is adapted to serve for culinary purposes, said sliding leaf E being simply shoved back to allow therefor.
F and H are leaves hinged together" andl adapted to fold, the former being hinged to the frame of the cupboard.
I is a loose leaf to be used in connection with leaves F and H and sliding leaf E when the extension is out its full length and sliding leaf E has been shoved the width of a leaf forward of the movable part, as indicated by dotted lines in' Fig. 2.
J at dotted lines in Fig. l represents the flour-bins, and K K the spice or other drawers in movable part D. L L are rollers on said movable part, one being provided for each of the front corners of said part and another centrally at the base of the back of the same.
From the foregoing designation of parts of the device it will readily be seen that when more space is desired than that afforded by sliding leaf E it is only necessary to draw movable section D forward from between sides C C and insert loose leaf I back of sliding leaf E.
lf it is desired to double the size of the extension, instead of using the loose leaf the' movable part is drawn still farther forward, and the double hinged leaf is dropped.
If it is desired to use all the leaves, the slideleaf is shoved forward, as indicated in Fig. 4 and by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the loose leaf is inserted back of the slide-leaf, and the hinged leaves are folded out.
When it is desired to use the top of the movable section for culinary or other purposes, slide-leaf E can be shoved back into the space occupied by the double hinged leaf when it is folded out, and the top of the movable part is thus left free.
Without changing the scope or intent of my invention I desire to reserve the right to vary the number of leaves in the construction of these cupboards.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination in a cupboard, of an upper shelved section carried by the back of the cupboard and duplicate lower side piecesv spaced therefrom, vertically beneath the sides of said shelved section, and also carried by the back of The cupboard, a movable section provided with bins, drawers, and rollers adapted to travel between said side pieces on suitable guides, a loose leaf, a double hinged leaf connected with the cupboard-frame, and
- a sliding leaf supported by said movable section, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with a cupboard of an extension consisting of a movable bin-section, duplicate'side pieces connected with the back of the cupboard and adapted to form a receptacle for said movable section, a slidable leaf on said movable section, a foldable double leaf hinged to the cupboard-frame in the plane fof the slidable leaf and one or more loose
