GEORGEADAM SPIES,.OF LOWELL, OHIO.
LIBRARY-TABLE.
Application filed March 29, 1919.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Srins, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Library-T able, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to furniture, and in particular the present disclosure relates to book shelf construction for tables.
A purpose of the invention is to disclose the design of a certain book shelf or rack construction fitted with inclosing covers which may be contained within an ordinary library table.
For the purposes of description is to be had to the accompanying forming a part hereof, in Wl11Cl1-- Figure 1 1s a side view of a table embodying the invention reference drawings showing the roll-top thereof in closed position; b
Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section and partly broken away, showing the roll-- top in open position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the movable bookshelf shown separate;
Fig. 1. is a horizontal view of the table showing the top and other parts partly broken away; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
The table shown comprises a top 1 and legs 2, the legs being braced by transverse members 3 and a longitudinal shelf and brace 4, as is usual in tables of this type. Parallel to the table top and spaced therebeneath is a second shelf 6 which provides suitable support for two oppositely-disposed movable bookshelves 7 The bookshelves are mounted to slide inwardly beneath the table top to retracted and stantially concealed position, and outwardly to projecting position to provide convenient access to the books thereupon.
Eachcshelf as shown in Fig. 3 comprises a base which provides support for a load of books, a back 8 which serves as an abutment to limit the innermost position of books, and end members 9, which serve to keep the books from falling sidewise. A transverse guide and stop bar 10 is preferably secured across the rear end of each movable shelf and has projecting ends which engage be- Specification of Letters Patent.
Rollers 14 are provided upon Patented Dec. 30, 1919. Serial No. 285,956.
neath suitable transverse guides 11 at each end of the table, as shown in Fig. 5. a The projecting ends of the bar 10 engaging beneath the guides 11 serve to maintain the movable shelf in alin'ement and in horizontal position, that is, as it is moved outwardly and inwardly, and when in outermost position serves to limit the outward movement of the shelf and to assist in supporting the same Each shelf preferably, also, is provided with a finishing strip 12 at its forwardend, which provides both an attractive finish and a convenient hand-hold for pulling the shelf out to projecting and accessible position. the shelf 6 adjacent the edge of the same. I preferably provide three rollers, two adj acent the edges of the shelf and one in the center of the same. Three additional rollers 14 are secured adjacent the rear edge of each of the shelves 7 the rollers 14: being adapted to engage the upper surface of the shelf 6, and the rollers 14: engaging the under surface 16 of the shelves 7.
In order to give an attractive finish to the table, a roll-top or curtain is provided on each side, which is arranged to move downwardly over the front of the corresponding bookshelf to inclose the same, or upwardly and inwardly to lie beneath the table top and out of the way, providing access to the bookshelf. The roll-top,furthermore, provides means for keeping out the dust from the bookshelves.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A shelf construction for tables with the top and legs, a shelf support placed beneath the table top, a pair ofoppositely disposed book containing racks carried by the shelf support, a stop bar fitted to each shelf support, and a guide cooperating with the stop bars for supporting the book containing racks in approximately horizontal position when said book containing racks are drawn outwardly to expose books to view.
2. A shelf construction for tables with a top and legs, a shelf support placed beneath the top, a pair of oppositely disposed book containing racks carried by the shelf support, rollers interposed between the shelf support and the book containing rack, and a guide bar cooperating With the book containing rack for holding said rack in approximately horizontal position.
3. A shelf construction for tables With a 5 top and legs, ashelf support placed beneath the table top, a pair of oppositely disposed book containing racks carried by the shelf,
racks and engaging the guide bar.
