DRESS-(3MP.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,403, dated December 29, 1903. Application filed August 21, 1903. Serial No. 170,359. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that- LTHoMAs MORTON, a subject of-the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Brearley Street, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Dress-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dress-clips, and primarily intended for those which are likely to come in contact with the skin of the wearer; and its object is to provide a non-metallic surface upon such clips, so that when such parts lie next the skin the latter is protected from metallic contact.
' In many cases-such as clips for garters,
sleeve-suspenders, and the like-the touch of metal next the skin is Objectionablawhile even in some cases when otherwise used the hard edges and parts of the metal clip quickly destroy the delicate clothing against which they wear. Further than this, my invention in most if not all cases affords an ornamentation not easily otherwise obtained. I attain this object by the arrangement of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a View in side elevation, and Fig. 2 an inverted plan view,of my invention. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional. side view of the lower part of the clip, showing those parts involving this my invention. Fig. 4 is a sectional side viewof a modified form of my invention.
Similar reference-numbers refer to the same thing or part throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, my object is to provide the clip with a covering-surface 6 of velvet, cloth, or other similar material, and to efiect this I adapt the parts forming the clip as follows: 7 is the base-plate or what may be termed the frame of the clip, which is made with a narrow ledge or flange 8, which is finally closed down onto the material 6. When such clips are required ,to accommodate the attachment thereto of a band 9, a frame 10 is arranged within the frame 7, and the frame 10 is provided with an outwardly-extending connecting-bar 11, having an opening for the purpose of connecting the band 9 to the said bar 11. I now base-plate 12, which further insert the cover gether.
is raised from its edges, so as to present the surface 6 as much forward as may be desired and upon which the said covering 6 is placed. Hence when the edges 8 are turned down upon thematerial the surface 6 is firmly secured and stands well forward. The pressurepad 13 is secured by making a perforation in the plate 7, having turned-up edges 14,which are closed down upon the edges of the pad after the latter has been inserted. The cliplever 16 I need not further describe, as it is well known and forms no part of this my invention.
Referring to Fig. 4., I have shown how the shape of the coveringsurfacc may be varied and also how the covering material may be carried around the edges of the cover-plate upon which it is carried. In this case I make the frame 7 of a circular shape and form thereon the tubular projection 15. The cover baseplate 12- is made with an upstanding edge or flange, within which the frame 7 lies. The
1. In a dress-clip the combination with'the gripping-lever, andthe frame, of a base-plate, a covering of soft material for said base-plate, and a frame having a flange engaging the edges of said covering to secure it to said base-plate.
2. In a dress-clip the combination with a lever and a flanged frame connected therewith and having a pressure-surface coacting with said lever, of a raised base-plate inclosed in said frame, and a covering of soft material for said plate position by means of the flanges of said frame.
3. In a dress-clip the combination with a and adapted to be retained in lever and a frame connected therewith and having a pressure-surface coacting with said lever of a base-plate provided with a flange, a frame lying in said base-plate, provided with a tubular projection, an eyelet connected with the frame which is connected with the lever and adapted to be engaged by said tubular extension and a cover of soft material placed over the said base-plate and adapted to be retained in said base-plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
