APPLICATION FILED APR. 4, 1903.
H0 MODEL.
Maria/4M} UNITED STATES Patented December 22, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
I A FRANZ ARTHUR FRENZEL, OF CHEMNITZ, GERMANY.
ADJUSTABLE CURTAIN FOR WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 747,407, dated December 22, 1903.
7 Application filed April 4:, 1903. $erial No. 151,168. (No model.)
improvement is to render the curtain adj List-- able, so that it can be fitted into a windowcase of any size without making any holes into the brickwork or stones and afterward transferred to another window-case of difierent size when removing from a dwelling to another one.
The adjustable curtain is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a central rod on the lefthand side in longitudinal section and on the right-hand side in elevation, the middle part being omitted for want of space. Fig. 2 is a long view of the one side part of the curtainframe, the upper and the lower rods being shown broken for want of space; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the curtain and window-frame on a reduced scale, it being stated that the part omitted on the right-hand side is similarly shaped'or constructed.
A metal tube a is provided on both ends with screw-threads b, of which the one is a right-handed and the other a left-handed one. On either screw-thread b a long nut c is fitted, which is also provided with an external screwthread d. On the latter a short winged nut f or f is fitted, which is provided with a spherical surface 9 for bearing against the spherical recess 71. of the side part of the frame. On screwing home the two nuts f the two side parts of the frame will be pressed against the walls of the window-case. The upper rod 2' for supporting the rod is, on which the linen is wound, Fig. 3, as well as the studl for holding the lower edge of the curtain at a certain distance from the window, are equally window-case.
made adjustable, so that the whole can beadjusted to the varying size of the window-case.
For applying the curtain toa certain windowcase the rod a is first so adjusted in its length as to be a little shorter than the width of the Then the two side parts of the frame are placed on the walls of the windowcase on the external side before the window, and the rod a is introduced between the two side parts, after which the two nuts 01 d are screwed home to secure the frame. Thereupon the upper rods t' and the lower rods are adjusted and secured by screwing home the two nutsfandf.
Having now described my invention, that which I wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- The combination with two vertical side parts for placing on the walls of a windowcase, said side parts being each provided in the center with a hole and a spherical recess surrounding same and formed on the upper and lower sides as guides, of a horizontal rod having on both ends long screw-threads, two long nuts adapted to said screw-threads of said horizontal rod for entering said central holes of said two vertical side parts and being provided with external screw-threads, two winged nuts adapted to said external screwthreads of said long nuts and provided with spherical surfaces for hearing against said spherical recesses of said side parts, two vertical lower rods sliding and being adjustable in the lower guides of said side parts, two studs linked to said lower vertical rods for holding the lower end of a curtain, two vertical upper rods sliding and being adjustable in the upper guides of said side parts, anda roll mounted to turn in the upper ends of said upper vertical rods for winding on and unwinding the curtain, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereofl have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
FRANZ ARTHUR F-BENZEL.
Witnesses: C. O. MEYER, FREDERICK J. DIETZMAN.
