GEORGE A. STILES, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
EYEGLASSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,262, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed June 13, 1903. Serial No. 161.306. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LGEORGE A. ST1LEs,a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex' and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to eyeglasses; and the object of the same is to design a resilient bridge and a removable spreader for the same mounted to limit the grip of the jaws.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a pair of eyeglasses with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail of the bridge. Fig. 3 is a detail of the spreader.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a bridge which connects two frames 2, supporting eyeglasses 3. The bridge 1 comprises two rigid side bars 4, the upper ends of which extend substantially parallel, and a normally straight resilient cross-bar 5, which connects the upper ends of said side bars and meets them at right angles. The side bars 4: have their lower ends connected to posts 6, formed integral with the frames 2. Jaws 7, adapted to grip the nose, are also attached to the posts 6. To limit the grip of the jaws 7, a spreaderbar 8 is provided having its ends SKturned down at rightangles to the body and set to engage the side bars 4. The body of the spreader 8 is straight and is centrally secured to the under side of the cross-bar 5 by means of a screw 9, for which'a' suitable clamp may be substituted. It is easily seen that the construction herein described permits the spreader 8 to be detached and another differing slightlyin length substituted therefor to give greater or less spread to the jaws 6, and thereby adapt them to fit noses of different sizes and shapes.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pair of eyeglasses, the combination of a pair of lenses, provided with frames, a bridge connecting said frames and comprising rigid side bars and a straight resilient crossbar connecting the upper ends of said side bars, and a straight spreader-bar connected to said cross-bar and having ends turned at right angles to the body thereof and engaging said side bars to limit the grip of the jaws, substantially as described.
2. In a pair of eyeglasses, the combination with two lenses provided with frames bearing jaws to grip the nose, side bars connected at their lower ends to said frames, a normally straight resilient crossbar connecting the upper ends of said side bars, and a spreaderbar secured intermediate its ends to said cross-bar and set with both its ends engaging said side bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' GEORGE A. STILES.
