PATENT OFFICE.
- ISAAC PEARL GRANTHAM, 0F 'DARLINGTON, MISSOURI.
LANTERN-REST FOR WAGON-POLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,956, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed June 16, 1903.
Too. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC PEARL GRAN- THAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Darlington, in the county of Gentry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Restsfor Wagon-Poles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rests for lanterns to be attached to wagon-poles, and has for its object to provide a device which can be readily attached to and detached from a wagon-pole and on which the lantern may be secured or removed therefrom quickly.
The device consists, essentially, of a base secured by suitable means to the front of the wagon-pole and has hinged thereto a platform to receive the lantern and provided with means for holding the lantern relative thereto.
The advantagesand operation of my invention will readily appear hereinafter and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal view in section, and Fig. 3 a view in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, A represents the wagon pole or tongue.
B and B represent clips surrounding the tongue and secured through holes in depending portions 0 by means of bolts and nuts D.
E represents a metal strap secured to the w front clip B and carried back and bent to pass between the clip B and pole A and secured thereto in any suitable manner.
F represents a bolt secured through clip B and strap E, and F a bolt secured through strap E above clip B and adapted to hold a base-plate G through holes at the front and back thereof bymeans of nuts f and f, meshing with said bolts F andF, respectively.
H represents the platform for receiving and holding lantern I, which is pivotally mounted near the rear of said base-plate G by means Serial No. 161,579. (No model.)
of hinges J. The front of platform H is formed with a flange K, having spring-teeth L thereon to press against the front of the lantern, while the back of the platform has a flange M, with a thumb-screw N therein to hold the lantern in place on the platform.
0 represents a leaf-spring secured on bolt F between base-plate G and nut. f to hold platform H depressed, if desired. The length of said leaf-spring 0 may be regulated by means of slot o therein. P rep resents a leafspring suitably secured between the clip B and bolt F to give the base-plate a slight spring to prevent extinguish ment of the blaze through jolting of the pole A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A lantern holder comprising a baseplate, a platform pivotally mounted thereon for holding the lantern, and means to resiliently hold the front of said platform, substantially as shown and described.
2. A lantern-holder, a plate, clips attached thereto for securing same to a pole, a platform hinged on said plate, a leaf-spring secured at the front of said base-plate and adapted to bear against the front of said platform,
substantially as shown and described.
3. A lantern-holder, clips attached thereto, a strap secured to the top of one of said clips and passed over and bent under the other clip, a leaf-spring secured between said clip and strap, and a base-plate for holding the lanternsecured to said strap, substantially as shown and described.
4. A lantern-holder, clips attached thereto, a strap secured to the top of one of said clips and passed over and bent under the other clip, a leaf-spring secured between said clip and strap, a base-plate secured to said strap, and a platform pivotally mounted on said base-plate, substantially as shown and described.
5. A lantern-holder, clips attached thereto for securing same to a pole, a strap secured to the top of one of said clips and passed over and bent under the other clip and secured, a leaf-spring secured between said clip and strap, a base-plate secured to said strap, a
platform pivotally mounted on said basename to this specification in the presence of plate, means to secure a lantern to said plattwo subscribing witnesses.
form, and a, slotted leaf-spring secured to said base-plate and adapted to bear against said ISAAC PEARL GRANTHAM' 5 platform, substantially asshown and. de- Witnesses:
W. M. WILSON,
scribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my W. F. DALLEY.
