MERRELS E. OOVEY, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
OFFICE.
THILL-SUPPOBT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERRELs E. OovnY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Elgin in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Thill-Supports; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the action of the locking device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking device. Fig. 5 is a side view of a modified form of holder. Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary sectional view showing a modified form of locking device. Fig. 7 is a similar view showing a further modified means for locking the holder proper in position. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the locking device used in the form of the invention shown in 7.
The invention relates to thill-supports, of simple, eflicient and inexpensive character, for keeping the thills in raised position in the stable or other vehicle repository, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the thills, I), the cross-bar connecting the same near their rear ends, and c, the swingle-tree having a pivotal bolt 0, provided with the usual securing nut 0 at its lower end.
(Z, is the thill holder, preferably made of malleable iron and comprising a body or main portion (Z, having base branches or parallel forks 6, designed for detachable engagement with the front vehicle axle or the springs thereof, said main portion having a forward and upward angular extension f, provided with an opening or slot f, at its forward end, having a terminal bar f. The forks a, have washers c, for the purpose of preventing scratching the paint upon the vehicle axle and springs.
g, is the holder proper, which is usually or preferably formed of a straight piece of light tubular metal, such as a gas pipe, having at its upper end a socket seat 9, for the reception of the securing nut c, of the pivotal bolt Specification of Letters Patent.

0, aforesaid, and at its lower end a stop flange 9 For the purpose of preventing the holder 9, from falling after the thills have been raised and the holder adjusted'so that the seat g, thereof will engage with the nut 0 a lock it, is provided consisting of a plate 72, having pivotal hook engagement h with the terminal bar f said plate having a perforation If, for engagement with the holder g. Thus, when it is desired to adjust such holder to support the raised thills, the plate look It, is raised to a position about at right angles to the axis of the holder, where it is stopped by contact with the lower Wall of the extension 7", at the sides of the slotf, when the perforation 7L3, of the lock, which is slightly larger than the cross-section of the holder, will admit of free passage of the holder therethrough. The holder having been adjusted to the desired position the plate lock is al lowed to fall until opposite portions of the wall of the perforation h strike the holder, when any downward movement of the holder will be prevented for the reason that the angular relation of the plate lock and the holder will then be fixed by gravity and cannot be altered, except by upward movement of the plate lock. The plate lock may be readily released from engagement with the holder by upward swinging movement thereof upon its pivotal hook. This plate look It, may be replaced by a wire lock such as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, as will readily be apparent, or a ratchet look may be used as shown in Figs. 7 8.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings a modified form of the main or carrying portion of the holder is illustrated, wherein a flat piece of metal 2', having attachment to a wooden base i, is employed, the general relation of the parts being the same as described for the main form of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a thill support, the combination with a carrier having downward extending base branches separated from front to rear for rigid engagement with the vehicle and a forward and upward extension provided with an opening at its forward end, of a longitudinally adjustable slidable holder engaging said opening and having a seat at its upper end for engagement with the cross bar of the thills, said holder when in use extending from top to bottom away from the vehicle,
and said carrier having a separate catch device at its forward end having direct engagement with said holder to maintain it in position as adjusted.
2. In a thill support, the combination with a carrier having downward projecting forks at its inner end portion, and a forward and upward extension provided with a slot at its outer end portion having a terminal bar, of a longitudinally adjustable holder of straight character, and a locking device located in said slot, having pivotal engagement with said terminal bar, and provided with a perforation of slightly larger size than the cross section of the holder, said holder having engagement with the perforation of the locking device.
3. In a thill support, the combination with a carrier having a forward extension provided with an opening at its forward end, of a longitudinally adjustable slidable holder engaging said opening and having a seat at its upper end for engagement with the cross bar of the thills, and a pivotal catch device having direct engagement with said holder to maintain it in position as adjusted, and being caplable of swinging out of engagement therewit In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, 30
in presence of two witnesses.
