SPECIFICATION forming partllof Letters Patent No. 746,584, dated December 8, 1903.
5 Application filed April l, 1903. Serial No. 150,649. (No model.)
To @ZZ 'La7/1,0711, t may concern;
Be it known that I', DAVID SCHALK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton,in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bed and Couch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined beds and couches; and its object is to provide a simple device which may be quickly and conveniently converted from a couch into a bed, or vice versa, and which is provided with a compartment for containing articles of clothing, dac. l
A further object is to employ a closure for the front of the couoh,which is attached in a novel manner to the bottom thereof, whereby said closure can be moved to a position under the couch when the same is converted into a bed. l
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the couch. Fig.A 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a plan View showing the parts arranged for use as a bed and with the compartment open. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the `couch and showing in ele^ vation the means for securing the front closure to the bottom of the device. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a portion of said closure and showing the engaging hook of the fastening means, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of a guide for said hook. f
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is the body of the device, which may be constructed of any suitable material and is open at one side and the top. To the side of the ends of this body is hinged a similar section 2, which is open at one side and the bottom thereof. A compartment 3 is formed upon one end of the main body 1 and extends Iupward therefrom a suitable distance Lopermit the hinged cover 4 thereof to extend'upward at an incline from the top 5 of section 2. This lid 4, as well as the top 5, is upholstered.
Parallel cleats 6 are arranged upon the bottom of the body 1 and extend transversely thereof, and to these cleats are secured in- .wardly-extending metal strips 7, the ends of `which are turned inward, as shown at 8.
'be secured to the top of said section 2 in any suitable manner, as by means of a fastener 12. This closure and the sides of the compartment 3 are upholstered, and it is therefore obvious thatv the device normally presents every appearance of a couch.
- Supporting-strips 13 are arranged upon the bottom and top, respectively, of body 1 and section 2, at the ends thereof, and to them are secured strips of, preferably, wire fabric 14, which are connected atV the edges thereof adjoining the connected 4edges of the body 1 and section 2, and strips 14 may also be supported by suitablyarran ged coiled springs l5.
When it is desired to convert the couch into a bed, the fastener 12 is unhoolked and closure ll swung outward and then moved longitudinally under the couch, thereby causing the hooks 9 to slide upon the strip 7. Section 2 is then swung outward into the position shown in Fig. 3, and legs I6, which are secured in any suitable manner to the rear edge of section 2, are swung `outward in position to support said section. When the device is folded to form a couch, the mattress and bedclothing are folded between the fabric strips 14.
It will be understood that clothing or other articles may be placed within the compartment 3, and therefore be readily accessible.
I attach importance to the use of the hooked I rods 10 for supporting the closure 11 and to the guide employed for said ho0ks,.as by means of this arrangement said closure can be readily moved out ofthe way, and yet held in such position as to be guided back to its proper place when it is desired to close the bed. y
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferredform of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications maybe made therein without ICO means for securing the closure in such position, rods fastened tothe inner surface of the closure, laterally extending hooks integral with the rods, transversely-extending cleats upon the bottom of the body, and laterallyprojecting strips secured to the cleats and engaged by, and adapted to guide, the hooks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DAVID SCIIALK. Witnesses:
