ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO EDWARD G.

TOGGLE-Cl-IAIN RELEASE FOR LOG-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,438, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed February 3, 1903. Renewed October 31, 1903. Serial No. 179.411. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM ASHORAFT and JULIUS C. LUBBEs, of the city of Greenville, Wayne county, State of'Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toggle-Chain Releases for Log-Oars, of which the following is a full, clear, and c2;- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. to Our invention relates to improvements in toggle-chain releases for log-cars, and is an improvement upon the device heretofore patented to us by Letters Patent of the United States No. 711,271, under date of October 14,
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a log-car bed embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, showing a load of logs in position. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing the rock-shaft in section and the hooks connected therewith and actuated thereby. Fig. 5 is a perspective showing the lever whereby the rock-shaft is controlled.
Thelog-car which is illustratedin the drawings and to which our toggle-chain release is applied consists of longitudinal sills l and 1, whereon the cross-timbers 2 and 2 are mounted. The cross-timbers 2 and 2 are held in position by means of the braces 3. Upon the top surface of each of the cross-timbers 2-and 2 we have provided the metallic strip 4, which terminates upon one side of the car in 3 5 the hooks 5, which are adapted to catch the outer log and hold it in position while the remaining logs are being loaded and untilit is desired to discharge the same. Upon the sill l the hook 6 is provided, which is intended 0 to hold the fixed end of the chain7. Upon the outer side of the sill l the rock-shaft 8 is journaled in bearings 9. The rock-shaft 8 is provided intermediate of its length with the book 10, which is adapted to receive and hold the free end of the chain 7. At one of its ends the rock-shaft 8 projects under the crosstimber 2, at which end it is provided with the flange 11, which is connected, by means of the pin 12, with the lever 13, which extends toward the other side of the car, where the lever 13 is pivoted to the bar 14 by means of the pin 15. The bar 14 is pivoted to the cross-timber 2 by means of the pin16 and is provided with the ears 17 and 18, which ears are adapted to receive a lever whereby the rock-shaft 8 may be turned to fasten the chain 7 in position by means of the hook 10 or released when desired. At the inner side of the cross-timbers 2 and 2 the rock-shaft 8 is provided with cranks 19, which are pivoted to the bars 29 by means of pins 21, the outer ends of the bars 20'being pivoted by means of pins 22 to the bell-crank lever 23. The bell-crank levers 23 are pivoted to the cross-timbers 2 and 2? by means of pins 24, and they are provided at their outer ends with the upturned hooks 25. The pins 24 extend outwardly through the guards 26, which are secured to the sills by the pins 27.
Logs are piled upon the cross-timbers 2 and 2, as shown in Fig. 3, and are usually piled higher at the sides than in the middle. The
chain 7 is then brought around the load and to the opposite side of the car and its free end placed over the hook 10. By means of a lever inserted between the cars 17 and 18 the rock-shaft 8 is turned, carrying the hook 10 to a vertical position and at the same time thrusting the hooks 25 upward to engage with and hold the outer log upon the side of the car opposite to the hooks 5. When this operation has been performed, the hooks 10 and 25 are in the position indicated in Fig. 4 and the bar 14 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, when the pins 15 and 16 are substantially in alinement, so as to hold the lever 13 rigidly in place. When it is desired to unload the car, the bar 14 is restored to the position shown in Fig. 5, disengaging the hook 10 from the free end of the chain and releasing the chain and disengaging the books 25 from the outer log, the releasing of the hooks 10 and 25 thus accomplished enabling the operator to discharge the contents of the car freely.
Having fully described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to have secured to us by the grant of Letters Patent,.is--
In a device of the class named, the combination of longitudinal sills, crosstimbers, hooks mounted upon the upper sides of the I00 cross-timbers at one side of the car adapted to hold an outer log in position, bell-crank levers provided with hooks mounted upon the cross-timbers at the opposite side of the car, a rock-shaft mounted upon one of the sills upon the side nearest the bell-crank levers and connecting therewith and adapted to ac tuate the same, a hook mounted upon the rock-shaft and adapted to engage with the free end of the chain, a lever mounted upon one of the cross-timbers and connected with the rock-shaft by means of a crank, said lever being adapted to operate the rock-shaft In testimony whereof We affix our signa- 2o tures in presence of two witnesses.
