Description
W.. G. SHEABER.
. Gar-Brakes.
5 5 93 I Patented 0ct.13,1874.
WITNESSES WWW ATTORNEYS.
U NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLlAM O. SHEARER, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,984, dated October 13, 1874; application filed August 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. SHEARER, of Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Brake and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view.
The invention relates, generally, to brake mechanism for trains of cars, but more particularly to the patented brake of J. S. Lamar, No. 129,968, on which the present invention is believed to be a valuable improvement.
The means by which I accomplish the intended improvement will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the truck of a car on which the shoes B are operated by the usual lever O, rods D E, lever F, and rock-shaft G, having the short arm g. I apply to this shaft a long bifurcated arm, 9 with pulley g at the end. H H are two pulleys placed parallel close together, and journaled in the uprights h h that rise from a longitudinal bar, I. J is a winding drum on the tender, preferably having a cone with spiral groove, to take up slack, or a portion thereof, and connected by a chain, K,
the last. The short arm 9 of rock-shaft G is connected with brake-lever F.
There will thus be but one winding apparatus on the train, and that will be upon the tender. A ratchet and detent may of course be used in connection with the winding-shaft and the long chain coupled between the cars by a detachable link.
The operation is as follows: The winding of the cone, drum, shaft, or Windlass J, draws down the arm 9 of brake-shaft G, and applies the brake-shoes B at great advantage and with great friction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination with the brake-shaft G, having bifurcated arm 9 with end pulley 9 of the pulleys H H, Windlass J, and the chain K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
W. O. SHEARER.
