TOY BANK.
SPEGIFIOATIOIT forming part of Letters Eatent No. 744,886, dated November 24, 1903.
- Application filed April 22,1903. Serial lie-153,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. WADE, of Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Banks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an attractive and interesting toy bank primarily designed for sale or distribution for advertising purposes, the opening of the door calling for the exercise of skill and ingenuity.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective with portions of the casing and door broken away. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the locking device, shown tilted in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the door above the engaging cleats. Fig. 4 shows in perspective a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 6 a plan view, of a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the casing of atoy bank, and Zthe door, equipped on its inner face with two blocks or cleats 3, with a narrow space between their opposite ends. A space is likewise left between each cleat and the face of thedoor, forming conjointly a guideway 4:.
5 designates a box-like platform located near the top of the casing beneath a glass covering 6. This platform, which incloses a ball or weight 7, is mounted at its center upon a rod 8, pivoted at 9 to casing 1 and extended downwardly, so as to parallel door 2 when the latter is closed. This rod is designed to fit in the guideway 4 and is free'to be moved from end to end thereof, according as the platform is tilted by the rolling of the ball 7.
The width of this rod is such that when caused to aline with the space between the two locking-cleats door 2 may be opened. At all other times, however, it is impossible to open the door, because of the engagement of the cleats with the rod. To effect the proper positioning of the locking-rod relatively to the cleats to permit of the opening of the door, it is necessary that the platform be thrown into balance by the positioning of the ball directly at the center thereof.
It is obvious that changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, as shown in Fig. 4c, the cleats 10 may be mounted directly on the swinging rod and a stationary cooperating part 12 may be secured directly to the door, with the result that the latter can only be opened when the cleats are positioned so as to place the space between their opposite ends in line with the part 12. The platform may be divided by raised surfaces 13 to add to the difficulty in positioning that one of a series of balls or weights by which the balancing of the platform can alone be accomplished. (See Figs. 5 and 6.)
I claim as my invention 1. In a toy having a door, a movable platform,a locking-rod actuated by such platform, means secured to the door with which such rod cooperates for effecting the locking of the door, and means movable on the platform for so positioning such rod as to permit of the opening of the door, as set forth.
2. In a toy having a door, a pivoted rod, a platform mounted centrally on such rod, a ball or weight movable on such platform, and spaced-apart members secured to the door and between which and the door said rod is designed to project, such door being free to be opened when the rod is intermediate such members, as set forth.
3. A toy bank having a door, a rod pivoted to the bank-casing, means mountedon the door with which the rod is designed to 006perate for holding the door looked, a platform located near one wall of the bank-casing and mounted at its center on the outer end of such rod, and a ball orweight within such platform, as set forth.
4. The combination with the bank-casing and the door therefor having spaced-apart cleats on its inner side, of the box-like platform movable in the top of the casing, a rod pivoted to such casing and movable over the inner face of the door between the latter and said cleats, a ball within such platform, and a glass covering for the latter, as set forth.
5. In a toy having a door, a pivoted rod, a In testimony whereof I have signed this platform mounted centrally on such rod havspecification in the presence of two subscribing raised surfaces, balls movable on the plating witnesses.
form over such surfaces, and spaced-apart MARTIN J. WADE. 5 members secured to the door and between Witnesses:
which and the door said rod is designed to MARY BRADLEY,
project, as set forth. N. E. HESS.
