UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN J. WADE, OF IOWA CITY, IOWA.
TOY BAN K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 746,612, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed May 1, 1903. $erial No. 155,204. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. WADE, of Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Banks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of thisinvention is to provide a toy bank or box of any kind with a lock the release of which from engagement with the door depends upon the positioning of a ball or weight or series of them at a common point.
The invention comprehends a lever normally in engagement with a door, the disengagement of the lever depending upon the positioning of a ball or weight or series of them at such a point as to engage a member carried by the lever, and thereby tilt the latter on its fulcrum.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the casing of a toy bank or other receptacle, and 2 the door thereof, which is equipped with a beveled lug 4. With this lug is designed to engage a lever 5, fulcrumed on the casing.
On the other end of the lever is a circular platform 6, fitted within a correspondinglyshaped recess in the top (or it may 'be the side) of the casing, a stud 7 of such platform projecting through an opening in the center of the recess. Around this stud is a spring 8, by which the platform is normally held flush with the face of the wall of the casing. Within an inclosure 9, at the center of which is the platform, are three (more or less) balls or weights 9", visible through an inclosing glass 10. To effect the opening of the door and thereby gain access to the interior of the bank, it is necessary to position each of the balls upon the spring sustained platform, whereupon the pressure of the spring being overcome the platform will move inwardly and turn the lever on its fulcrum, thereby freeing the outer end thereof from engagement with the door.
A toy or puzzle thus constructedis exceedingly interesting and calls for the exercise of care and skill to effect the release of the door.
Although specially designed for toy banks such as are used for advertising purposes, the invention may be employed in connection with match-boxes and other receptacles.
In lieu of the s pring-s'ustained platform the center of the inclosure may be formed with a pocket for the ball in the form of a concavity 12, into which projects a stud 13, extended from the inner end of thelocking-lever. This form is shown in Figs. 4. and 5.
p I claim as my invention- 1. A toy or puzzle consisting of a casing having a door, and an inclosure in one wall of the casing, a. lever fulcrumed on the casing for engaging the door to retain it looked, a member mounted on the lever extended into such inclosure, and a ball or weight for engaging such member to effect the tilting of the lever and the release of the door, as set forth.
2. A toy or puzzle consisting of a casing having a door and an inclosure in one wall of for engaging the door, a platform mounted on the lever and fitted in said inclosure, and a sitioned on such platform to effect the tilting of the lever and the release of the door, as
set forth.
p 3. A toyor puzzle consisting of a casing having a door equipped with a notch, an inclosure in one wall of the casing having a rethe casing, a lever fulcrumed on the casing mally holding such platform flush with the face of the wall, and a series of balls or weights designed to be positioned on such platform to overcome the tension of the spring 5 and efiect the tilting of the lever and the release of the door, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two snbscribing witnesses.
MARTIN J. WADE.
