SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 744,186, dated November 17, 1903-v Applicatio'n filed August 2, 1898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. GENUNG, of Waterloo, in the county of Seneca, in the State of- New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supplemental Bottoms for Transportation-Oaskets,of which-the following,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object the produc tion of a supplemental bottomfor a transportation-casket which is particularly applicable in connection with an inclosing case for embalming, cooling, and shipping a body; and to this end it consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the component parts of a supplemental bottom for a transportation casket, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively top plan and side elevation of my improved supplemental bottom for a transportation-casket, said bottom being shown in Fig. 1 assubstantially flat and in Fig. 2 as inits operative position. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are vertical sectional views taken, respectively, on lines 3 3, 4 4, and 5 5, Fig. 1. Figs. 6 and 7 are isometric views of the detached foot-rest and head-block of my invention. Figs. 8 and 9 are isometric views of an engaging bar and a brace for holding the adjustable leg of my invention in its operative position.
My supplemental bottom for a transportation-casket preferably consists of a frame A, an adjustable leg B, a head-rest O, and a footrest D. The frame A is generally provided with handles a and is usually composed of lengthwise bars a a, and cross-bars a having their adjacent longitudinal edges separated and their opposite ends secured upon,

a which are separated a greater distance than the remaining cross-bars, as best seen in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, and the bars a are suitably secured toadjacent cross-bars a and are provided with a plurality of transverse shoulders a and lengthwise cut-outs a Theadjustable legBis ofany desirable form, size, and construction and may be movable into the recess a when desired. The foot of the leg 13 is normally supported in the same plane as one end of the frame A when my supplemental bottom is in its operative position and is movableinto and out of the recess a and the opposite extremity of said leg is pivoted in the recess a between the bars a ct and serves to raise and lower the corresponding end of the frame A. When the leg B is projected from the recess and its foot is engaged by the floor, one end of the frame is raised and the opposite end or foot rests on the floor in the same plane as the foot of said leg. The leg B may be held in its adjusted position by any suitable means, (here illustrated as engaging bars a and braces b.) The bars 0. preferably extend lengthwise of the frame A, are suitably secured to the inner faces-0f the bars ct" a of said frame in alinement with the opening a and form, essentially, portions of the opposite sides of the recess 0, Said bars a? are generally formed with lengthwise slots a having their upper walls provided with engaging shoulders at The braces b are pivoted at corresponding ends to the leg B, and their opposite ends are preferably formed with lateral extensions 19', handpieces b and springarms b having lateral extensions 19 The lateral extensions 1) b of the braces b are movable in the slots a as best seen in Fig. 4, the extensions 1) being normally engaged with the shoulders (1 and the extensions 11 with the opposite walls of the slots a". When it is desired to adjust the leg B, the handpieces b are depressed against the action of the spring-arms b for forcing the extensions 1) out of engagement with the shoulders at whereupon said handpieces are moved lengthwise of the frame A until the desired adjustment of the leg 13 is effected.
The head-rest 0 generally extends longitudinally between the lengthwise bars a a of the frame A, is interposed between the two cross-bars a arranged at opposite sides of the opening a'fland is usually composed of lengthwise bars a and cross-bars 0'. One extremity of the head-rest is pivoted to the inner ends of the lengthwise bars a of the frame A in proximity to the cross-bar a forming the inner wall of the opening at in said frame, and the opposite extremity of the head-rest is movable above the frame and is usually provided with a head-block C.
The means for holding the head-rest in its normal position preferably consists of a supporting member 0 formed substantially U- shaped and having its intermediate portion engaged with the shoulders at and its opposite branches movable into the cut-outs a of the bars a in a plane substantially parallel with said bars.
The head-block O is preferably formed with a concave upper face 0 a convex lower face 0 and projecting arms 0 The face 0 closely fits the adjacent portion of a body supported by my invention, and the face 0 rests upon the upper face of the head-rest O and permits more or less rocking movement of the head-block C independently of the headrest for facilitating the support of said adjacent portion of a body. The arms 0 are passed through enlargements of openings 0, formed in the free end of the head-rest, and are provided with shoulders which detachably engage the under face of the contiguous portion of said head-rest for normally preventing detachment of the head-block O. The head-rest C is particularly applicable for my supplemental bottom for transportation-caskets; but it is obvious that any other suitable head-rest may be used, if desired.
The foot-rest D is preferably adjustably mounted on the frame A and composed of a central section (:1 and side sections d, having corresponding ends hinged to the opposite extremities of the section 61 and their other ends provided with arms d movable laterally between the cross-bars a of the frame A and provided with shoulders d for detachably engaging the under faces of said crossbars and holding the foot-rest in its adjusted position. Said foot-rest is also particularly applicable for my supplemental bottom for a transportation-casket; but it is obvious that any other suitable foot-rest may be used with 7 said supplemental bottom.

2. A supplemental bottom for a transportation-casket, the same comprising a frame provided with a plurality of shoulders, an adjustable leg having its foot normally supported in the same plane as one end of the frame and its opposite extremity secured to the frame in proximity to the other end thereof for raising and lowering the frame, and a brace having one end connected to the leg and its opposite end movable into engagement with the shoulders, said brace being provided with means for holding its said opposite end in engagement with the shoulders, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A supplemental bottom for a transportation-casket, the same comprising a frame formed with a substantially lengthwise slot having one wall thereof provided with a plurality of shoulders, an adjustable leg having its foot supported in the same plane as one end of the frame and its opposite extremity secured to the frame in proximity to the other end thereof for raising and lowering the same, and a brace having one end pivoted to the leg and its other end provided with a lateral extension movable in the slot for engaging the shoulders, and a spring-arm having a lateral extension movable in the slot for engaging the wall thereof opposite to said shoulders, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A supplemental bottom for a transportation-casket, the same comprising a frame formed with a recess in its lower face, and a substantially lengthwise slot formed in one side of the recess and having one wall thereof provided with a plurality of shoulders, an adjustable leg having its foot supported in the same plane as one end of the frame and movable into and out of the recess and its opposite extremity secured to the frame for raising and lowering the same, and a brace having one end pivoted to the leg and its other end movable into engagement with the shoulders and provided with a spring-arm for engaging the wall of the slot of the frame opposite to said shoulders, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
