Be it known that I, THOMAS WHEATLEY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mutilating Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in mutilators for mutilating the values indicated on checks, notes, drafts, and similar commercial paper.

The object of this device is to emboss upon or mutilate the numerals which indicate the value of the paper in such manner that if any attempt should be made to alter or add to the numerals the ink would readily flow through the punctures and blot upon the surface of the check, by which any such effort to change the value would be readily detected.

Referring to the drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 are respectively a top plan, side elevation, and an end view of my improved mutilating device. Fig. 4 is asectional view taken on line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the detached blank for forming the main supporting-frame of the device. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views showing, respectively, the embossing-roller and the handle for operating the same.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

A frame 1 is stamped or cut from thin sheet metal and folded in such manner as to form lower and upper walls 2 and 3 and an end wall 4, which unites corresponding ends of the walls 2 and 3, the central portion of the lower wall being pressed upwardly and formed into a serrated or knurled panel 5, and the upper wall is provided with parallel depending flanges 6, having slots 7, which form suitable ways for receiving and guiding an embossing-roller 8, said embossing-roller being movable longitudinally between the flanges 6 and is provided with oppositelyprojecting trunnions 9, which ride in the slots or ways 7. The surface of this roller is also knurled and meshes with the serrations of the panel 5.

A handle or operating member 12 for the roller 8 preferably consists of a single piece of wire having its opposite ends extended in the same direction and provided with eyes 13, which are looped around the trunnions 9, upon which trunnions the operating member is free to rock vertically and its free end is movable into a recess l4 in the upper wall 3,

so as to normally lie within'the planes of the outer surface of the lower and upper walls in order that the device may occupy as small space as possible and so that it can be readily carried in the vest-pocket.

The upper Wall is usually provided with a depressed extension 16, by which the device maybe held by one hand while the roller is operated by the other hand, the lower edges of the depending flanges 6 being disposed in a plane above the upper serrated face of the panel 5 for forming a lengthwise passage 17 to permit the insertion of the check or other paper.

In the operation of this device the paper is inserted in the passage 17 in such manner that the portion of the paper bearing the value-indicating numerals lies over and upon the serrated panel 5. In this position the roller 8 is moved back and forth over the numerals until that portion of the paper is mutilated, one operation of the roller backward and forward being usually sufficient, as the walls of the slot 7 are so arranged as to hold the periphery of the roller firmly against the upper serrated face of the panel.

It will be noted that by pressing the central portion of the lower wall upwardly the margin surrounding said raised panel formsa fiat supporting-base for the device, which may be placed upon a hooker any suitable support when mutilating the paper.

The free end of the handle 12 is preferably swelled laterally at 12' to form yielding shoulders, which spring into engagement with the walls of the recess 14: when the handle is forcibly depressed to its normal position and holds the handle from upward or endwise movement, the extreme outer end of said handle normally resting on the outer face of the depressed extension 16.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-- 1. 'In a mutilating device, a frame having lower and upper walls, the lower wall having a serrated panel, parallel flanges projecting from the upper wall and a roller movable along the panel between the flanges.

2. In a mutilating device, a frame having lower and upper walls united at one end and their other ends separated, the lower wall having a serrated panel, parallel flanges projecting from the upper wall, and a serrated roller movable along the panel between the flanges.

3. In a mutilating device, a frame having lower and upper walls, the lower wall having a serrated panel, parallel flanges projecting from the upper wall and formed with lengthwise slots, a roller movable along the panel between the flanges and guided in the slots and means to move the roller.

4. In a mutilating device, a frame having lower and upper walls, the lower wall having a serrated panel, parallel flanges projecting from the upper wall and formed with lengthwise slots and a roller movable along the panel and provided with trunnions riding in the slots.

5.-In a mutilating device, a frame having lower and upper walls united at one end and having their other ends separated, the lower wall being formed with a serrated panel, parallel flanges projecting from the upper wall and provided with lengthwise ways parallel with the panel, a roller movable upon the panel between the flanges and guided on said ways and means to actuate the roller.

6. A mutilating device comprising a frame consisting of a single piece of sheet metal folded to form lower and upper walls, the lower wall having a portion thereof pressed upwardly and serrated for the purpose described in combination with a serrated roller movable along said serrated face.

7. A mutilating device comprising a frame consisting of, a single piece of sheet'metal folded to form lower and. upper walls, the lower wall havinga portion thereof pressed upwardly and serrated for the purpose described and the upper wall having portions thereof bent toward the lower wall for forming depending flanges, said flanges being slotted lengthwise in combination with a serrated roller guided in said slots.

S. A mutilating device comprisinga frame consisting of a single piece of sheet metal folded to form lower and upper walls, the lower wall having a portion thereof pressed upwardly and serrated for the purpose described and the upper wall having portions thereof bent toward the lower wall for forming depending flanges, said flanges being slotted lengthwise in combination with a serrated roller guided in said slots and means to actuate the roller.

9. In a mutilating device, a frame having lower and upper walls united at one end, the other ends being separated, the upper wall being provided with a recess, a roller movable upon the lower wall, a swinging handle connected to move the roller, a portion of the handle being movable into the recess, and means for holding the handle in the recess.
