; T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNE` Be it known that I, JAMES GRESHAM, of the'cty of Manchester, in the county OfLancnster, in the United i Kingdom ofGreat Britain and Ireland, haya invented new and useful ImprovementsV in that Apparatus known as Gitfards Injector; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, which form a part of lthis specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
I My improvcments'consist in an improved arrangement and construction of the mcehanism'ot' 'an injector, which is illustrated by 4Figurey I, a longitudinal section, and
Figure, a crpss-secton uponithe line A B, iig. 1. v
The case of the injector is made in 'two parts; in the upper part, a, the stcamlnozlc b is screwed, and n. branch, a, is made in this part to form a junction with the steam-pipe. The centralspindle, c, is also fitted, to screw into the part a, passing through apacking-gland, a2, arranged as shown. Upon the .central spindle a valve, c1, is formed, which has its seating or facing upon the interior of the stcamluozzle IJ, as shown, so that, by rotating the central spindle e by the handle c", the steam may be turned on or oii', or regulated. Thclowcr part ofthe case a is connected to the upper part of the case d by a flange-joint, as shown, the exterior of 4the steam-nozzle b-tting into the interior of the lower part ofthe case. '.Lhe upper part of'the cased has n brunch, d, upon it, to'forni a junction with the lwater-pipe. The combiningconeee, and dischnrgingcone el arcvformed in one piece, (they may be made in two pieces, screwed togethcrJ of thesame external diameter, or nearly so, especially at the ends, and the interiorA ofthe case ol is boredout, so that the coue'pnrt e and el may slide in it, being made fis-good a. fit as practicable without packing, so that any iluid whichinay escapo between thc exterior of thedischarging-cone andthe interior of the casing, will enter the cavity formed round-tlie'orifiecz of the cones, fronivwhich cavity it will be drawn through ,the oritieec2 by 'thej passing jet, when the injector is properly adjusted. fis an ordinary stop-valve, to prevent the return of thciiid from the boiler. di is :In outlet in the cavity @Z1-above the highest level of the orifice e2, for the escapeoliniluid when starting the injector', but this outlet, d2, will not be required when u self-acting stopvilvc is used for opening nud yclosinga valve through which fluid can escape when starting the injector. The cone part e and cl is adjusted hy a short shaft-,g, which has a boss, gl, upon it, having two arms, g2, that fitl cross-grooves in the sides of the cone part e and c,elutch` fork fashion. The boss part g1 is first placed into the case, then the shaft g is passed through the s idc of the case, through the boss g, which is thensecured by pins,- `and 'thon thc lid g is secured by screws, as shown. The outside end of the shaftg has a little packing placed-round it, Vand then the handle y' is securednpon it. There is a point, g5, g. arranged to slide in the handle, which point is acted upon n spring, y, arranged as shown. VThis spring-point, g5, will enternotches in a. quadrant, d3, foruierlupon the side of the ease d so as `to hold the handle g4 iu any position in which it may beplaced.v In somo situations the handle y* may not be convenient, and the 'a rod may be jointed .to it, as shown'in dotted line, fig; 1,I and the end oiA this rod may he screwed so as to pass into a. screw-handle, by turni-ng which the rod will bc actuated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-
The arrangement of the rock-shaft g and forked lever g2, with relation to tho conc-piee c e and case d, all con'structedpand operating essentially as shown and described, for the purposesct forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in thc presence of-two subscribing -i'vitne'sscs.
. JAMES GRESHAM.
