PATENT @FFIQE,
OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR DRAIN-COCK OR WATERFAUCETn Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Application filed March 29,1905. Serial No. 252,729.
T0 00 whonc it TIl/LI/Z/ concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT C, GREEN- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connellsville', in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain Cocks or VVater-Faucets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved drain-cock or water-faucet; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear sectional elevation of my improve drain-cock or water-faucet, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe eccentric disk detached from the cock.
To construct a drain-cock or water-faueet in accordance with my invention, I form from suitable cast metal a shell consisting of an annular portion 1 to form a chamber 2 closed at the front by a threaded cap 3, the said cap being fitted with a discharge-spout 4 and the said shell having formed integral therewith a downwardly-projecting shank with an external threaded portion 16, a circular flange 16, and an intermediate square part, the said shank having a central bore 15 to form a water-inlet to the aforesaid chamber 2. Operating within the chamber 2 is a disk 5, formed with radial extensions 6 and 6 to act as stops and with a semicircular inclined or eccentric flange 7, the said disk being provided at the front with a shank, a portion 8 of which acts as a bearing, supported in a central orifice formed in the screw-cap 3 and the other part 8 asa means of attachment with a handle or lever 9, attached thereto by a screw 10. Attached to or formed integral with the inner face of the cap 3 is a bearing 12, to which a downwardly-extending lever 11 is pivoted by means of a pin 13, the said lever being provided at its lower end with soft-rubber disk to form a valve 14 to close the entrance to the discharge-spout 4. Between the handle or lever 9 and the cap 3 is arranged a spiral spring 17, one end of which is connected to said lever and the other to the said cap in a manner that will keep the disk 5 in a position to keep the valve 14 seated by the pressure of the water in the chamber 2.
In operation the water entering the chamber 2 under pressure will keep the valve 14 closed. By a downward movement of the lever 9 (to the position shown in dotted lines at Fig. 1) the eccentric 7 enters beneath the lever 11, elevating the valve 14 from its seat, permitting the water to flow from the spout 4. This movement of the lever 9 is limited to a quarter-revolution by the stops 6 and 6, the one coming in contact with the lever 11, as shown at Fig. 1, and the other with the bearings 13. When the pressure is released from the lever 9, the action of the spring 17 will bring the same back to its normal position, permitting the valve 14 to close.
It will be seen from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the cock may be used either as a drain-cock or self-acting water-faucet.
It is obvious that various slight modifications and changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described drain-cock or Waterfaucet, comprising the shell 1, having an interior chamber 2, athreaded shank 16 and water-inlet 15, the screw-cap 13 closing the front of said chamber, a spout 4 attached to said cap, the disk 5 formed with stops and eccentric flange 7, said disk having a shank projecting through the cap 3 and fitted with a spring-actuated lever 9, the pivoted lever 11 arranged over the eccentric flange 7 and fitted with a valve 14 adapted to close the opening of the spout 4, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT C. GREENLAND.
