Description

Patented Novp 7,1871.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J PEET, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,664, dated November 7, 1871 antedated October 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. PEET, of Boston, in the county of SuHolk and State of Massachusetts` have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valves; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following speciiication and represented in the accompanying drawing, which is a central and vertical section of a valve as provided with my invention.
My invention has reference to that class of 'valves which is employed in steam and waterpipes for shutting off the iiowage of such steam or water; and consists in combining with the main valve an auxiliary automatic valve, or means whereby the water as well as the sediment may be discharged from the chamber of the main valve whenever the plug of such main valve may be closed, thereby preventing the undue collection of sediments inthe main valve, as well as the freezing of such water therein in the winter.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown a steam or water-valve as constructed in accordance with Letters Patent granted to me on January 1,1867, and with the same lhave embodied :my present improvement. As the construction and operation of such valve is fully described in my said lpatent no detailed description thereof is deemed necessary.
In carrying out my present invention I combine with such a valve or other steam or watervalve an automatic means for freeing the main valve-chamber of any water or sediment that may have been left or deposited therein when the Aflowage of the water may be stopped and the plug closed upon its seat.
In the said drawing, A denotes a cylindrical projection which extends down at a right angle to the main valve-case B, and may be either cast in one piece therewith or separately therefrom, and afterward suitably aihxed thereto. The said cylinder A is open at both of its ends, its upper end communicating with the valve-chamber c of the main valve, the lower surface of such chamber being slightly tapering toward its middle, as shown in the drawing. b is the auxiliary valve-chamber formed within the said cylinder, the upper end of the said chamber constituting a seat for the auxiliary valve or plug e, whose stem is scored longitudinally so as to form channels for the water to flow down, and extends up into the main valvechamber. The said plug e is forced against its seat by means of a coiled spring, f, one end of which rests against the lower part of the plug and the other against the upper end of a screw-cap, g, screwed into the lower end of the cylinder A, such cap having a hole, h, made axially through it, as shown in the drawing, to allow of the discharge of the water or sediment flowing into the chamber b. Furthermore, the said auxiliary plug may have a rubber or leather washer, i, between its face and that ofV its seat, the. same being to insure a perfectly watertight connection, such plug also having vertical channels made through it to allow of the iiowage of the water through the chamber b.
Having described the construction of my said improvement, its operation is as follows: When the main plug is raised from its seat to allow of the free iiowage of the water through the valve the spring f forces the auxiliary plug c closely against its seat, and so as to maintain a perfectly tight connection. When the main plug is being forced down by the screw in order to shut ofi' the iiowage of the water or liquid the lower end of such plug presses against the stem of the auxiliary plug and forces the latter away from its seat, and thus enables the sediment and water in the chamber of the main valve to ilow through the auxiliary valve and escape.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s- The combination of an auxiliary automatic or selfclosing valve, c, and its seat and opening in the shell A, with the main valve and its adj uncts, the said parts being arranged to operate together in manner as described.
SAMUEL J. PEET.
