IMPROVEMENT IN Oscars.
@3112 fidgaule Itittt'th in in flgese itrttett patent amt matting part [If the an TO' ALL WHOM IT- MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. GLYMER, of Galion, in the county of-Crawi'o'rd, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to-the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a verticallsection through the centre of mychurn.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same in a plane at right angles with the plane of fig. 1.
A is the churn, which may have straight and parallel sides, be swelled like a barrel, or be conical, though I shall prefer that the construction be with straight and parallel sides, as represented. The churn may, moreover, be cylindrical or.prismoidal in form. Bis the dasher, nearly of the same diameter with the inside ofthc churn, allowing only a very narrow space between its edge and the churn. It is perforated with a number of holes to allow free passage for the cream from one side to the other as it is moved up and down. 0 is the dasher-stafl', connected by avibratingdink, D, to the lever '13. This lever has its fulcrum at a in the head of the standard 6, whichis attached to the outside of the churn, and extends upwards to a su tlicient distance above it to allow for the vibration of the lever. The head of the standard 6, as well as the lever, has holes, iz-..a, whereby the length of the stroke of the dasher may, be regulated to suit the quantity of cream in the churn-in simply shifting the pin a. F is the head or cover of the churn, and it is provided on its under side with a circular channel or groove 0, so formed that when the cream shall be dashed upward and, outwards against the inside of the churn it shall have no chance of escape around the edge of the cover, between it and the churn, butshall be deflected against the sloping sides of the channel c, and be thro'wn back into the churn. This will be readily understood on reference to the drawings. The cover-ls is provided with a I stalling-box, G, through which the stafl' c of the dasher works, similar to those in common use upon engines and pumps but instead of being held down upon the packing d by bolts, as is commonly done, it is kept down by the key H, which is pushed or driven in between the flange of the stuflingdiox and the stirrups I I, of iron or other metal, secured on opposite sides of the churn at its top. The key H is slotted for a portion of its length, so that as it is put in place its limbs may pass on either side of the staff 0, and bear alike on both sides of the stutfing-bcx flange. It is also slightly curved along its lower edges, so as to give it a cam like action on the flange-. Its ends on the upper surface have each an inclined plane, slightly deflected from the horizon, sloping in the same direction, or parallel with each other, which inclines find corresponding slopes on the under faces of the stirru'psI I. It ,will be seen that. this'arran'gement permits the packing-alto be jammed in the stuffing-box with as much force as is necessary to prevent leakage around the stafi. A foot piece, K, is attached to the bottom of the churn, whereby it may be held steady by the foot of theoperator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure byLetteri Patent, isl I In a churn, the cover F and its channel 0, arranged and operating as described and set forth, in com'li'i' nation with the stuffing-box G, key H, stirrups I, and adjustable lever E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I claim the channel 0- in a churn cover, arranged and operating as and for the purpose described.
The above specification signed by me this 18th day of January, 1867. v j
' JOSEPH C. CLYMEB.
