- Be it known that I, H. O. AMES, of New Orleans, Orleans parish, and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Steam Pumps; and do' hereby declare that the following is 'a full, clear', and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists of a buck 4t-wheel arranged to lrevolve within a suitable casing, to which 'steam is admitted in any proper' manner to act upon the buckets composing the wheel, and then exhausted or allowed to escape therefrom, in combination with a spiral screw-blade o r shaft connected with and operated byV the said bucket-wheel, which screw-blade is arranged to turn in the way or 'passage for the water, which, by its revolution, is thus drawn through such passage or way with a force and speed proportionate tov that Withwhich the bucket-wheel is revolved by the action of the steam and the gearing connecting it withthe spiral screw= blade. A, inthe drawings, represents a wheel, secured to a horizontal cent-regshaft, B, arranged to'turn in bearings of the sides G, of an upright'casing or'boxD, in which the s-aid wheel turn steam-tight. This wheel,around its periphery, is provided with `a series of buckets, E, at equal distances apart, to each of which, in regular order' and succession, as the wheel revolves, steam is admitted through the steamv passage F, communicating with the casing D at or near its top. The steam thus admitted actingupon thesidesof the said buckets, revolves the wheel of which they form a'part, and then escaping through the exhaust port Gr, at the lower `portion vof the casing D, enters the water-passage or way H. Around the periphery of the wheel A, to oneside of its bucks ets, a gear-ring or wheel I is secured, with which interlocks or engages the toothed or gear-wheel J, arranged to turn, by its horizontal shaft K, in suitable bearings of the water-way or passage H, hiereinbeforereferred to: This gear-wheel J has openings L through it and upon each side of the same; a similar spiral or screw-shaped blade, M, is secured to'and around itsgshaft K, the extreme diameterof which blades is equal or nearly so t6 the internal diameter ot' the water-way H. From the above-described arrangement of the gear-wheel or screw-blade shaft K, and its connection with the lever-clutch O, it is plainly obvious that by moving the handle end of thesaid lever ir. the proper direction the gear-wheel J can be either thrown out of or brought into connection with the bucketIl wheel gear, as the case may be; the said gear J, when in connection with theVbucket-wheel, revolving in conjunction with it, and thus its vscrew-blades drawing and forcing the. water through the water-way or passage H with a velocity and force indirect proportion to that with -which the bucket-wheel is revolved by the action of the steam admitted to it and the intermediate .gearing employed between it and the blade-shaft. In the use of myimproved rotary-pump, a water pipe or hose-suitable for conducting the water to and from the pump is first connected to the ends of the water=passage or way, when the screw-gear being thrown into connection with the bucket-'wheel gear, by properly moving the lever-handle therefor, and steam being admitted to the bucket-wheel, the said wheel is-revolved, and consequently Athe'screw-blade shaft thereby drawing and forcing the water through the water-passage or way H with a force proportionate to the force exerted upon the bucket-wheel by the steam, and the arrangement of intermediate gearing, as hereinbefore stated,the steam escaping from the wheel-casing throughthe opening G, hereinbefore referredto, into the water-passage or way, where it condenses and mixesl vwith the water passing through such way. B y the arrangement and combination of the bucket-wheel and screw-blade shaft or propeller, for forcingV the water through the water-passage, it is plainly apparent that more than one screw-blade shaft, each revolvingin a suitable and vseparate water-way or tube, may be connected with oneand the same bucket-wheehthus increasing'the e'ective power and working of .the pump'.` In lieu of arranging the revolving screw-blade outside of the budget-Wheel7 it may' be arranged so as to revolve in a position concentric therewith o1' at the centre of the bucket-wheel, the operation then being substantially the same, but this arrangement is not advisable when more than one water-Way is tovbe employed or used in connection with one and the saine bueket-Wl1eeL I dov not claim broadly the steam-wheel or the screw or propeller-.blade by themselves or separately, as I am fully aware that they have both been separately used before, but

The steam-wheel A, and screw or propellerblade M, combined together -and arranged and operating sub` stantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
