Description

vEUGENE GALLAGHER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 74,337, dated February 11, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT -IN lDEVIGE FOB TRANSMITT'ING MOTION.
iilge .dgthule maar te im tinte tttcrs ntcnt rnb. milking artt nt tige smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, EUGENE GALLAGHER, of Brooklyn, 4in the county of Kings, and State `of New York, have invented a: new and improved Device for Transmitting Motion; and I do hereby declarel that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making o. portion of this specification, in whieh- Y Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a device constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same. Y
`Figure 3 is a detached horizontal section of the same, taken in the line :ce: of fig.
Figure 4`is a detached transverse section of a portion of the same.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.,
This invention consists in the combination of a screw `with a wheel provided with `radial friction-rollers, whereby the rotation of'l the screw is caused to revolve the shaft ot' such wheel, situated transversely to and at one side of the aforesaid screw. t r
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invcntion,I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A.represents a screw or spiral shaft, the two ends of' which are formed with journals working in appropriate bearings, a, provided upon n suitable supporting framework', B, situated in a position transverse to that of the screw A, and either above or belowthe sume isarshzrft, C, upon which is secured a wheel, D,betwcen the central portin or boss, b, and rim, c, of which areplaeed any numhero'f rzidial pivotsV or shaft-s, tl, upon each of which is placed a friction-rollerfEt. This'whecl D is placed in such relation with the screwA, thatthe frietionrollers, at one-side thereof, it into one of the spiral grooves or channels of the'scrcngso thatwhen rotary motion is communicated to the screw, it will act` successively upon the aforesaid friction-rollers, a'nd communicate a rotary movement to the wheel D, and, of course, to the shaft thereof. It' desired, two whee1s,"D, situated one upon each side oi' the screw A, lformed upon a single boss, b, and gearing, as it were, into the two grooves or channels oi` the aforesaid screw, as shown more fully in figs. 2 and 3, may be employed, instead of a single wheel, as hercinbefore.described, and the screw, instead of being placed in a horizontal position, as represented in the drawings, muy be placed in a. vertical or an inclined position, as circumstances may require.
What I claim as my inventiomand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-, The wheel furnished with radial friction-rollers, in combination with the screw or spiral shaft A, substantially as and forthe purpose specied.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto'set my hand, this 7th day of May, 1867.
EUGENE GALLAGHER.
