Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BROWNE,of the city of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings, and Stato of New York, have invented a'new and useful Improvement'in Row-Locks, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of'this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section,

The na'ture of my invention relates more particularly to an improvement in a row-lock, for whiehI hold Letters Patent of the United States, bearing date April 30, 1867, and numbered 64,280, and having-in view a more reliable attachment between the gunwale of the boat and the row-lock than is obtained bythe form manufactured under the patent mentioned above, in which I stated that the weight and action of the oars would be suiiicicnt to adjust and hold the row-lock in its proper position on the upper `edge of the gunwale of the boat. Extensive experiment and daily use since that time have 4demonstrated that while the foregoing claim was, in the main, correct, nevertheless, at the two extreme points of the stroke or sweep of the oars, the angularity of their action, and the decrease of the direct Weight consequent thereon, tended to draw the row-lock inboard,
' thereby unshipping the oars at the end of each stroke. The object of my present invention is to prevent this action, and I will proceed to describe theconstruction and operation of the arrangement, which I-have found ,to answer every requirement, thereby enabling others skilled in the lartto make and use my invention, as herein set forth. i i

The boss-plate B, with the attached thole-pin, is connected to the lock base-plate C by a hinge and pin, E, thereby enabling the plate B and thole-pin A-to be wholly removed from the boat, or, when required, to fall iuboard, as shown by the red lines in tig. 1. This falling inboard, however, cannot take place unless the thole-pin A, with the attached eccentric, D, is brought into a position at right angles with the gunwale, or, in
