INVENTOR S WITNESSES: iazzzz'n Ward, Qfi-IW "ATTORNEY no" WASNINGYDN n c UNITED STATES Patented November 3, 1903.
PATENT ,OEEICE.
COMBINATION TABLE AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,843, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed May 9, 1903. Serial No. 156,387- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEYToN DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combination Table and Desk, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to the improvement of combined tables and desks; and the object of my invention is to provide an improved table of such arrangement and construction of parts as to admit of the same being readily converted into a desk or changed from the desk to table form and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. This object I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved table, showing the same converted into a desk. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the top section closed to the table form. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 00 a", of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4. is a sectional view on lineg y of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I construct a fixed table-frame comprising suitable supporting-legs 1, which are connected by side boards 2 and end boards 3 and 3*. I employ in connection with the fixed frame described a sliding frame-section comprising side boards 4, which are connected at one end by an end board 5, said side boards being adapted, as shown in the drawings, to embrace and be movable on the outer sides of the fixed-frame side boards 2. From opposite points in what We will term the forward portions of the frame side boards 2 projectguide-pins 6, these pins extending through and projecting on the inner sides of said side boards 2 and having enlarged ends, as shown. The outwardly-projecting portions of the pins 6 extend loosely, as shown, within longitudinal slots 7, formed in the frame side pieces 4, while the inner projecting portions of said pins 6 extend through comparatively short slotted openings 8, formed in short downwardly-projecting wings 9 of a horizontal table-top section 10, said wings being supported in slidable contact with the inner faces of the side frame-boards 2.
A second table-top section 11 is rigidly secured and supported upon the upper sides of the exterior frame sides 4. and end board 5. The table-top sections are of such width as to form a complete covering for the table when said sections are moved inward and caused to meet, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer or rear end portions of the side frame 2 are cut away on their upper sides, as indicated at 12, together with the upper end portions of the legs 1 of the corresponding end of the table. In order to convert my improved device from the table form indicated in Fig. 2 to the desk form indicated in Fig. 4, the top section 10 is first pulled outward or toward the corresponding end of the table until the guide and stop pins 6 are in the inner ends of the slotted openings 8 of the wings 9. The remaining table-top section, together with the sliding frame with which it is connected, is now pulled outward away from the section 10 until the outwardly-projecting portions of the pins 6 are in the outer ends of the slots 7. When in this position, it is obvious that the inner portion of the table-top section 11 will drop into the inclined offset 12 and that the side frame-pieces 4 of the section 10 will swing downward on the pins 6, thus permitting the cover-section 10 to assume an inclined or desktop position,-as shown in Fig. 1. As shown in section in Fig. 3 of the drawings and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the under side of the table top section 10 may have depending therefrom a slidable drawer 10 of suitable construction and arrangement for the reception of Writing materials or other articles.
From the construction shown and operation described it will be seen that an improved article of furniture is provided of such construction and arrangement of parts as to admit of its being readily changed from a table to a desk or desk to a table when desired. In
View of the fact that only one section of the table-top is employed as a desk-top it will be understood that such articles as are usually supported upon a table may, when it is desired to convert the table into the desk form, be
moved onto the top section 10, thus obviating the necessity of clearing the table when desiring to convert the same into a desk.
As indicated in the drawings, the outer enlarged ends of the guide-pins 6 are preferably countersunk Within the mouths of the slots 7, and the outer sides of the side boards 4 may be covered, as shown, with a veneering or other surface-plates 13, thus hiding from view the slots and heads of the guide-pins.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a combined table and desk construction,
PEYTON DOUGLAS.
In presence of- G. G. SHEPHERD, P. S. KARSHNER.
