NTOFI ohnmgzaia To-uYnu. vusumaron o c UNITED STATES Patented September 29, 1903.
JOHN N. STOKES, OF BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,944, dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed April 14, 1903.
To all "whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN N. STOKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bentonville, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is a churn; and it consists of a frame having an adjustable top, so that it may be adjusted to diderent sizes of churnpails and a spring secured to the top of the frame, around and to the dasher-handle of the dasher.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail, being a face view of the upper end of one of the end uprights of the frame. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the top. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the combined staple and spring.
My invention is described as follows:
1 is the churn-pail.
2 is the base of the frame.
3 represents the end pieces or uprights of the frame, their lower ends being rigidly secured to the base. In the upper ends of these uprights 3 are two vertical slots 4, extending down about one-third the distance of the entire length of said end pieces, leaving between said slots a central upright piece 5. These central upright pieces 5 are each provided with horizontal perforations 6.
The top piece 7 extends from one upright to the other and has extending from each end two arms 8, that fit in the slots 4: above mentioned, and between the two arms 8 is a slot 9,'in which the uprights 5 exactly fit. Said top piece 7 is provided with a central perforation 10, through which the handle 11 of the dasher extends and operates. Secured on the upper face of said top 7 is a coneshaped spiral spring 12, its base being secured to the upper face of said top, the lower end of said wire extending longitudinally along the upper face of said top and just-before it reaches the central upright piece 5 is Serial No. 152,542. (No model.)
bent into an inverted- U-shape spring 13, and then straight again on a line with said top, its point 14 entering one of the perforations 6 of said central piece, the base of said coilspring at this side being secured to the top by a staple 15. The other side of the spring is secured to said base by a combination staple and spring 16, the other prong or arm 17 of the staple extending along the top and provided with an inverted-U-shape spring 18 and then terminating in a point 19, said point adapted to enter one of the perforations 6 in the upright at that end of the frame, said inverted-U-shape spring being securedat its base to the top by a staple 20. The upper end of the spiral spring 12 is secured to a sleeve 21, and the said sleeve is adjustably secured to the dasher-handle by a thumbscrew 22, so that the tension of the spring may be adjusted by the operator. The purpose of the inverted-U-shape springs 13-and 18 and the points 14 and 19 is to enable the operator to adjust the top to different-sized churns.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the base 2, uprights 3, each provided in its upper end, with vertical slots 4; perforated central uprights 5, between said slots; top 7, provided with a central perforation 10; arms 8, extending from said top, and fitting in said slots 4, and between said arms, slots 9, in which fit the central uprights 5; churn-pail 1, situated in said frame; dasher-handle 11, extending upward from said paihthrough its top, and through the perforation in the top frame; cone-shaped spiral spring 12, secured to the upper face of the top 7; sleeve 21, encircling the dasher 11, and secured to the upper end of said cone-shaped spiral spring 12; thumbscrew 22, working through said sleeve 21, and adapted to secure the same at any place on the dasher-handle, and combination staple, spring, and holder-points 17, securing said spiral spring and said top in place, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the base, uprights secured to, and extending vertically from said base, and provided in their upper ends,
with Vertical slots, leaving between said verted-U-shaped springs secured to the upslots, perforated central uprights; a top proper face of said top, each spring provided Vided with a central perforation, and arms to I with a point to enter the said central perfo- I5 fit and move up and down in said vertical rated uprights, substantially as shown and slots; a churn-pail seated on said base, and described and for the purposes set forth. between said uprights; dasher-handle, ex- In testimony whereof I affix my signature tending up through the lid of said churnin presence of two witnesses,
pail, and said top; a s iral spring Working w around said dasher-han dle, and secured to JOHN STOKES the upper face of said top; an adjustable sleeve secured to the upper end of said spiral spring, and around said dasher-handle; inl Witnesses:
