DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING HAMMOCKS.
SPECiFICA'lfION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,293, dated August 13, 1 89 5.
Application fi October 4, 1894. Serial No. 524,875. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. EMBURY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting Hammocks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to portable racks or devices for suspendingor hanging hammocks.
My object is to produce a knockdown hammock-supporting frame, adjustable to accommodate itself to hammocks of various sizes and adapted to be folded and stored away so as to occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use; and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel features and combinations of parts hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the frame complete ready for use, showing a hammock suspended therefrom in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of the length-adjusting top bar. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing how the top cross-bar of each frame is secured to the vertical'standards. Fig. 6 shows the lower end of the standards provided with a ball for adapting it for indoor use.
The frame or rack is constructed substantially as shown, comprising standards a, hav= ing recesses a at their upper ends, the lower ends preferably sharpened and provided with means for securing the ball b or other enlarged siurface when it is desired to use the frame inoors.
b is a bar connecting the lower ends of the standards.
0 is a cross rod, having its ends 0' bent and adapted to engage with the recess a for the purpose of connecting the standards at their upper ends, and is provided centrally upon its lower side with a hook d from which the hammock is suspended, and is also provided with an inwardly-extending arm d having an open ing, and to each arm the longitudinally-adjusting connecting-bar e is secured. This longitudinal connecting-bar e is constructed in telescopic form, and e is a clamping device adapted to hold the two parts at any given position desired. It will be observed that by shortening or lengthening this longitudinal connecting-bar the rack may be adjusted to support a hammock of any'size and may also be used to raise and lower the same hammock. Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A device for supporting hammocks, comprising U-shaped end frames consisting of standards, recessed at their upper'ends, cross rods having their ends adapted to engage with said recesses, provided with downwardly extending hooks -dand inwardly extending arm d and adjustable longitudinal connecting bars and bars *b'-- connecting the lower ends of the end frames together laterally, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my J ESSIE E. MURRAY, HOWARD P. DENISON.
